I originally read this book in the early 1980's after seeing the documentary "Notes From A Jazz Survivor". Alto saxophonist Art Pepper, with his third wife Laurie tells his story in the most honest and frank manner I have read in any autobiography. Art, along with Chet Baker, was one of the most distressing examples of a life and career almost ruined by Heroin addiction and this tale stands as a salutory lesson to us all. Alcoholism and a five year spell in San Quentin prison followed. The fact he was able to, with Laurie's assistance, break himself free of his addictions and return to produce some of the best work of his career should be viewed as a major triumph in the face of adversity. This book is not for the faint hearted but is still a rewarding tale for the determined and if the story seems too harrowing then just let Art's music speak for him.
