A Fall the Trout Sigh,
By A Customer
This review is from: Straight to Hell Returns (Audio CD)
Thought this album was very interesting. Very eclectic in style with a kind of solid core provided by the pogues. Probably best described as a mix of twiddling stringness, vocal rawness and the lick and stick electro noodling. Dosen't take itself too seriously though, but provides a nice atmosphere of suppressed passion and danger.

almost twice as good,

..as the original release.. except that one track has been omitted, not an amazing one, but now a rare pogues muck-around, "The good the bad and the ugly". Reason? I guess royalties would have to be payable to Ennio Morricone.

Straight to Order, Returns.,
This review is from: Straight to Hell Returns (Audio CD)
I originally bought the soundtrack to `Straight to Hell' before its brief theatrical release was ended (it became known as `Straight to Video') to hear the new Pogues and Joe Strummer tracks it contained. So on hearing it had been expanded from 11 tracks to a mighty 28 I ordered `Straight to Hell Returns' to hear more of the same.
The Pogues version of `The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' the first release has been omitted no doubt because it wasn't actually featured in the film and if truth be told we aren't missing it much but it would have been nice to hear it again. Shane MacGowan's `Rake at the Gates of Hell' and `If I Should Fall From Grace with God' are both wonderful songs let down by very thin production by there own soundman. At least `If I Should Fall From Grace with God' was salvaged by being re-recorded to be the title track of The Pogues next l.p. The instrumental `Rabinga' and the sing-a-long `Danny Boy' again bring nothing of merit to this collection. The other nine Pogues contributions which were not on the original album are patchy but both `Night on Bald Mountain' and `Harmonicas' are brilliant and I cannot imagine why they weren't on the original release. The two Joe Strummer tracks are very weak showing nothing of the brilliance he was to bring to next years `Earthquake Weather' album and The Pray For Rain tracks put the incidental into music. Zander Schloss' `Salsa Y Ketchup' is the surprise success of the original album, nearly managing to be as silly yet entertaining as the film itself, and so I was hoping for greatness from the four additional Schloss tracks included here but they rarely rise above the standard that Pray For Rain set. I couldn't in any honestly recommend this or the original album, yet I bought it again on CD. It's a kind of guilty pleasure for me.
