Book Description

The Devil Never Forgets a Deal

I, Lilith Straight, was the woman you always wanted to be. I was married to someone better looking than your husband, we lived in that house you always wanted. Within a year, however, all of that changed. My marriage dissolved, my house burned down, and my job hardly paid the bills. So when I was hit by a car and died, I thought my life couldn’t get any worse. Boy, was I wrong.

Hell was not the place I imagined. It was worse. During my brief stay, I learned some disturbing truths about my family. Most worryingly my ancestor’s deal with the devil promising him every female descendent as a succubus.

So these were my options: Life on earth as a soul-sucking seductress. Or death and pass the succubus baton to my sweet little daughter. There was no choice. Welcome to hell on earth, Lilith. Mother, teacher, wanton she-demon.

More About the Author

Maybe it's because of my Halloween birthday, but I've always been attracted to scary stories. On the other hand, I love romances as well. Once I discovered that these two genres existed side-by-side in urban fantasy novels, I was in heaven! Urban fantasy is like chocolate and peanut butter: a perfect, to-die-for combination that I can never get enough of.

I've been writing since childhood, but earned my bachelor's degree in psychology and my master's in English literature. When I'm not writing, I'm a straight-laced English teacher at a two-year college in Detroit. I've been married to Mr. Right for over twenty-five years. I also have three teenaged children: a boy and two girls, all of whom have threatened to never speak to me again if I turn them into characters and put them into my books.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Light and Fun Read 19 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Imagine one day you have a normal hectic life of a thirty something, and then the next day you are involved in an accident and wake up in Hell. Well this is what happens to Lilith Straight. Upon her arrival in Hell Lilith finds out she is bound by a past generations bargain with the devil. This bargain is that it makes all female descendants a succubus. They have to use their charm and inner demon to do tasks. . There is only one descendant at a time who has to become a succubus, so when Lilith's mother Carrie passes away the role is then passed on to Lilith. Lilith is taken to the office of Miss Spry, who is the evil antagonist. Miss Spry is very much like the office boss with a demonic kick.

This is a fun and light read, I also really liked the feel and tempo of this book. It's very much tongue in cheek and at times can be quite humorous. There is a bit of romance in the book but not too much to make it all mushy and gooey. Some really good characters, I really liked Lilith, Miss Spry and Mr Clarke, they really were good. I hope I see more of them in book two.

The main character Lilith is very likeable. There are many things I could relate to her with. Her life is very complex and she is certainly a walking disaster. But nevertheless you can really sympathise with the poor lady, at times most normal people would have been ripping their hair out. You can see that she really adores her daughter Grace. It's not easy working on behalf of the devil and keeping a family going.

The main reason I didn't give this book a 5 star rating was the fact that I could put it down, I know when a book is 5 star as I can't eat or sleep for wanting to read it. This was missing for me. All the correct components were there, but it just missed out on a top rating.

Would I read more books by this author, yes I would! Her writing style is very relaxed and easy going.

3.0 out of 5 stars Light, paranormal read 23 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I started the book, I though uh-oh this is sounding like a Queen Betsy rip off - right from the first page Lilith mentions the day she died...and she was hit by a car. But Lilith doesn't rise from the dead, instead she must fulfil her family's destiny and become a succubus, in the employ of the devil... or Miss Spry as the case may be. Don't worry, it's not all about sex either, true to her name, Lilith is a temptress but must use her seductive skills to sway the decisions of humans and gain extra souls for the cause.

It's an easy read although I wouldn't put it in the paranormal romance sub-genre. It's not at all romantic or sexy if that's what you're after. Yes, there may be a hot demon in Lilith's life but it doesn't seem to go anywhere. Lilith is much more concerned about looking after her daughter and niece, paying the bills and not doing anything too evil.

And maybe that's my problem with Lilith as a character. All her guilt. She doesn't really fight against her job but she goes on a bit too much about how awful everything she has to do is. At times it's really quite funny but it is a little overdone for me and the plot loses its way.

I read a final copy of this book and there were a few sentences that didn't read quite right. These should be picked up by a good professional proofreader. However the ebook is certainly a bargain if you like light, paranormal reads.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story 8 Nov. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Definition of Succubus, from Wikipaedia -
"In folklore traced back to medieval legend, a succubus is a female demon or supernatural entity that appears in dreams, who takes the form of a human woman in order to seduce men, usually through sexual activity. The male counterpart is the incubus.
In modern fictional representations, a succubus may or may not appear in dreams and is often depicted as a highly attractive seductress or enchantress; whereas, in the past, succubi were generally depicted as frightening and demonic."

Lilith Straight's life has changed, and not for the better. But it's about to get much worse as she dies after being hit by a car. But that is not the end of Lilith's story. Far from it, her death is actually the beginning.

Taken to Hell she meets Miss Spry who tells her of a family contract which she, Lilith, now has to continue to fulfill or pay the consequences. Lilith is told she has to take over the family role of a succubus, and she has to do so until the day she dies, again! The contract dates back many generations when her ancestor was accused of being a witch and sentenced to death. To save herself she made a deal with the devil, promising that all future female descendants would become succubi.

However Lilith does not have a straight forward life. She is recently divorced, living in a much smaller place than she is used to. She has not only taken in her sister but also her niece, and has a young daughter of her own. Life is not easy. Throw in that if called by Miss Spry she must drop everything immediately to do her bidding, and you get an idea of how hectic her life has become.

Lilith rebels constantly, and the ensuing dramas are sometimes sad, sometimes funny.

3.0 out of 5 stars Demonic fun 4 Nov. 2013
By Bigfoot
Format:Kindle Edition
*I received a free copy of this book from the author through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*

Lilith is having a proper family crisis-divorcing her cheating husband, loss of rich secure lifestyle, sponging relatives in her home, bills to pay, no job, no love life...oh and she suddenly dies and finds she has no choice but to be a succubus for the Devil like previous female members of her family.

I don't read chicklit at all EVER. I don't read paranormal humour as I normally don't find anything funny in it. I signed up to do a book tour slot as a promo and ended up with a review copy. Erk, awkward much! I decided to give it a go anyway-and I actually enjoyed it! I did laugh at some stuff as well, which is new for me!

I liked Lilith a lot. She was amusing and entertaining, her life was a mess and you were rooting for her to pull things together and sort out the ungrateful relatives living in her house without paying their way. Her demonic employer and fellow employees were a lot of fun as well. Haven't we all thought that our boss was the Bitch from Hell? Well check out the ACTUAL Bitch from Hell that Lilith has to deal with! Our heroine lurches from one crisis to another, screwing up the most simple of tasks given to her every time. It made for an entertaining plot and a light, quick read to keep you amused. As a character Lilith changed through the book, in surprising ways that I certainly wasn't expecting. The other surprise for me is the type of succubus Lilith turns out to be. She is not having sex with victims all through the book-she is a succubus who tries to tempt people into all sorts of bad behaviour-cheating, suicide, drugs etc, anything that will damage their soul. I much preferred this to sex every two minutes.

The humour was great.
