By J. DOUGLAS TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
God inspired the Bible for a reason. He wants us to read and be changed! Here comes a new range of devotional-style commentaries, by a new voice within Evangelicalism accessing each book of the Bible. Containing sixty bite-sized insights per book, they are accessible, full of useful application and backed by substantial scholarship. They are a viable resource for daily devotions, house groups or as a preaching help. These new commentaries are top notch: biblical and passionate, clear and well-illustrated, simple and profound. God's Word comes to life as you read them, and the wonder of faith in Christ shines through every page.

This Matthew based commentary is packed with Kingdom life. Jesus of Nazareth sparked a massive revolution. A lot of people miss this core fact. They are so used to the long-haired, blue-eyed, white-robed storybook Jesus that they imagine he was about as tame and domesticated as many of His churches today. But he wasn't. Jesus was a radical, dangerous revolutionary who made big waves and powerful enemies. He was not killed for preaching pithy parables, but because he claimed to be King. Moore divides each of his five acts of the King and Kingdom life into Jesus' words and Jesus' deeds, so that we will not mistake Jesus for a mere lecturer in religious philosophy, but grasp that he is the-King-on-a-Mission and that he wants to enlist us as his glad and able followers!

Phil Moore, congratulations on your faithful and dynamic work in these...... On the down-side, I wish Monarch in their publishing wisdom had opted for a more spacious layout and size format so that each copy doesn't suffer reading distress in the handling of this little volume. Most commentaries are (sadly are) dull. This reads with a pulse of Holy Spirit life! Most commentaries are for scholars. These are well suited for you and me! This just could be a new way of reading the Bible with fresh eyes. Brilliant!

A Commentary for Everyman 17 Feb 2012
By Warren Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Commentaries are supposed to be dry and boring. At least, that's the impression that you'll get if you ask the average Christian about commentaries. They're for preachers and teachers, not for the average man on the street. Nobody would ever think of reading one.

That is, until you hand them one of the volumes of the Straight To The Heart series.

The first thing I noticed about this book is that it's broken down into easily digestible parts. Matthew is broken into 60 pieces, each one around four pages. This makes it a really good book for personal devotions -- it's something that you can read every day that is going to give you something to chew on all day long.

Moore also sticks to the theme of the book throughout. Matthew's Gospel is about the coming Kingdom, and that's how the book is structured. We get the Prologue, which is The Coming of the Kingdom. The rest of the book is about different aspects of that Kingdom -- lifestyle, mission, message, community, and judgment. Then the Epilogue, which is the Proclamation of the Kingdom. Each of the 60 bite-sized pieces contributes to the unified whole, giving the reader a daily bite of God's Word while also giving a greater understanding of what Matthew's purpose was, and what God has to teach us through this Gospel.

Moore teaches in this book, but it doesn't sound like he's teaching. You won't learn Greek roots, there's no discussion of whether Matthew or Mark was the first Gospel or whether Matthew was originally written in Greek or Aramaic. It's also not a verse by verse study; instead, Moore takes the major themes of each section of the book and expounds on that. Everything that you learn is immediately applicable to daily life; the purpose is to teach how to function as a citizen of the Kingdom of God.

According to Amazon, there are 5 volumes in the series so far -- Matthew, Genesis, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Acts, and Revelation. After reading Matthew, the other four have been placed on my wish list. This is a series that at the very least should be used for personal devotions; it's also very suitable for a church Bible study. I highly recommend each book in this series, and look forward to more.
Fall In Love With the Word Once Again! 15 Feb 2012
By Godspoetic1 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I was truly blessed to have the opportunity to read Phil Moore's book "Straight to the Heart of Matthew: 60 Bite-Sized Insights". It is one of several in a series that he has written, and it was the first that I had read, and won't be the last! If you are looking for a book to read on a devotional level, then this is definitely the one you want to read! it had so much to offer from details about Jesus, to the places he walked, the people he taught, and so many, many things that I had not even thought of, yet I know, has always been right there in front of me, in the Word! That is one thing that I love about books like this, we can read the Bible over and over, yet a simple book as this, can bring out something so deep from the Word, that we fall in love once again with the scriptures that we have read time and time again!

FTC Guidelines disclosure, I must state that I was given a copy of the book, "Straight to the Heart of Matthew: 60 Bite-Sized Insights" from the publisher in exchange for my review. My opinions are expressly my own, and are in no way influenced positively or negatively, due to receiving this book in exchange for the review.

Title: Straight to the Heart Series; 60 Bite-Sized Insights
New Testament: "Matthew"
Author: Phil Moore
Publisher: Monarch Books
Pages: 270

Could you use a devotional on the Book of Matthew that brings encouraging insights? When was the last time you read Matthew in the New Testament? Well, let me encourage you with this 60 Bite-Sized Insights book. Unlike other books, the insights include how the Lord taught the author the truths presented in scripture. The reader should understand this author didn't attempt in any way to cover each passage or all that can be unearthed in each chapter of Matthew.
Phil Moore shares his journey as he studied and applied what he learned in the New Testament from the book of Matthew. In his book, he breaks Matthew down into Prologue, Acts 1 through 5 and ending with an Epilogue. Each devotional insight is centered on Matthew's theme of Kingdom, which Matthew wrote for his Jewish audience in the first century. While it may seem to be a long time ago, and it is, there are commands which we must be reminded of if we are citizens of the Kingdom of God.
Included in this book are some ways that Phil was taught to think differently than in the past as he studied and unearthed scripture lessons. Along with all this, we learn how Jesus loved people and reached out to them as He does today. Phil Moore, while being an author, is also a pastor of a church in London, an evangelist and a Bible teacher.
The Gospel of Matthew has much to teach us not only about the Kingdom, but also about the people of Jesus day, which should encourage us today. For example on page 52 we read: "The twelve disciples show us that no one is too talentless to follow Jesus, because the Great Teacher is able to find potential in any of his pupils." How encouraging is that? I think it encourages a whole lot, and should also propel us to be available to do whatever Jesus calls us to do. So grab the devotional and your Bible, sit down and sit at the feet of the Master who loves us all so much He died for us. Then, He arose so we can be reconciled to God. Now how awesome is that?
