The exciting message of Acts is faithfully developed and applied. The theme of ordinary people fitting in with an all action loving God, is just the encouragement every believer needs to carry out the Lord's command to be his witnesses. Without the power and dynamic of God's Spirit all efforts are feeble at best. I have recommended the "Straight to the Heart" series to several friends.

A curates egg of a book. The overall impression it creates is of someone using the accounts of the early church in Acts to put across his strong opinions about how the Church of today should be going about its ministry. This would be better done in a book on that particular subject so that in the commentary he could let the stories in Acts speak for themselves. There are some parts of the book that do bring light to the passages. But, on the other hand, some verses aren't commented on at all. And, by sod's law, those verses were the very ones that I sought illumination of from the commentary!
The book is sub-titled '60 Bite Sized Insights' which indicates a better way to approach it. Not as a commentary, but as an interesting set of short thought-provoking essays to use as part of your regular Prayer & Study time.

Straight to the Heart Series Phil Moore...Book of Acts
This book starts out with 2 bite size chapters, one introducing the reader to the Straight to the heart series, and the second introducing ordinary people to an extraordinary God. Followed by 58 bite size chapters taken from the book of Acts. I first thought this was a commentary on the book of Acts, but it is more like a devotional, but it's actually much more and much deeper than a devotional. It would make a wonderful Bible study for yourself, or any number of groups. There are footnotes and references at the bottom of each page to futher your study too!
A few short chapter topics you will find here are: Prayer which moves God; The Promise; Starting Points; Betty Zane; When the Past Becomes a Problem; Job Decription; and several of my favorites are Paul's First and Second Missionary Journies and Paul's Journey to Rome.
There are so many Bible Studies, and Devotionals out today that are good, but I would rate this one as top of the line. The chapters are written in a way for you to have a short study, or to go futher and deeper into the Book of the Bible. I highly recommend Phil Moore's book on Acts to see for yourself what it is like. You will not be disappointed. After reading this one, I want more books in this series for myself.

More Than a Devotional

Straight to the Heart of Acts is labeled as a devotional book, but I see it as going a bit deeper. A devotional tends to share thoughts based on a passage of Scripture. Moore's approach goes beyond that, falling somewhere between devotional and academic. In each of the 60 three to five page entries, Moore evaluates the historical and cultural context and almost provides a light Bible study lesson on each passage. Were I to need to fit this series into a category, I would describe Moore's approach as being a devotional commentary.
As for content, I find Straight to the Heart of Acts to be very solid Biblically. It does not automatically follow that I agree with Moore's every deduction and conclusion. In fact, I can definitively say that he and I would not see eye to eye in every case. But, Moore does not draw his conclusions out of thin air. He has solid Scriptural reasons for his understanding and interpretation of Scripture. For this reason, I feel that I can disagree with him while still confidently reading and recommending his book and the series as a whole. My one statement accompanying the recommendation would be to encourage each reader to go back and search Scripture personally, not simply accepting an idea because Moore - or any other author or preacher (my own husband included!) - states it to be true.
I look forward to, over the course of time, adding books from the Straight to the Heart Series to our library for both personal consumption and sharing with others.

Challenging, Inspirational, and Practical Study!

I've been totally enjoying the reading of the Acts Bible Study from the Straight to the Heart series by Phil Moore. There are 60 "bite size readings", with each being 5-10 minutes long. The writing is bold, unique and filled with scripture. I really enjoy reading the background of the scripture passages, as well as the practical applications he includes in each reading. I've found myself taking notes and thinking of quotes to share via facebook, twitter and email. The readings are empowering and inspirational - designed to reawaken believers to the power of Christ yearning to work through us in our daily lives.
Here is how Phil introduces the book of Acts: "In 30AD, Jesus of Nazareth looked to have been an utter failure. If you don't understand that, then you will miss the message of the book of Acts. It is a record of survival through adversity, triumph against all odds, and victory snatched from the jaws of defeat. It is the story of a group of ordinary people who turned the tide of history through the power of their extraordinary God." His theme is that Acts wasn't just written as a tale of the early church, but as a challenge for churches today.
I would highly recommend this as a devotional, a Bible study help, or just something to read. It would also work for a group Bible study or small group, with members reading the entire chapter of scripture during the week, and one teacher leading the group through Phil's text. It's for men, women or mature teens. I look forward to checking out the other books in the series!
