I do believe that there is more than one translation of this book, and the corgi one, which amazon stocks, is the original one, which has since been improved. As I'm reading it I get the feel that it may also have been cut too, I'll only know when I buy the better translation.
This one doesn't give the name of the translator, and the English is strange at times. It also has no foreward, which I believe later translations do.

Loved this book, just saddened that it ended so 'unfinished' and that the reviews for the follow up of this book are all pretty negative.

I read a lot of erotica and this one perhaps is a little outdated for me. It's more masochistic and sadistic than erotic or sexy. If you're into pain whilst having sex and being humiliated or enslaved, then this book will be right up your alley!
For me, I found it too brutal and not all erotic. As a female, I felt embarrassed and angry during the book and did not even bother to read past the 2nd chapter. It didn't get any better for me...sorry! Not my cup of tea. However, the story was interesting in itself, just not something that stirred me...more intrigued me.
Little Birds by Anais Nin is a good example of great erotic fiction!
