Offset by much good natured banter and the odd daft incident, '9.9 for style Willie', as the stretcher slipped and the practice casualty, alias the author, took an expected high dive into the Firth of Lorne. It is all part of the experience of being a crew member of the Oban Lifeboat 'family'. Author Willie Melville has been a member of the wider lifeboat 'family' for more years that cares to remember. A life long passion for sailing and the sea led him to becoming a crew member of the Helensburgh lifeboat in the 1960s. A career move that brought him to Oban where he promptly assisted in organising the arrival of the first lifeboat for Oban in 1971, volunteering as a crew member, and then, on retirement, becoming station chairman. Even today Willie is still actively working for the RNLI as a Sea Safety Officer as well as finding time to sell the 32' ketch 'Te Bheag Eile'. A huge amount of painstaking research has gone into the making of this story. A story it is, not just a list of facts but a rattling good yarn. "The Story of Oban Lifeboat" gives the reader a real insight into the life and times of a West Highland Lifeboat Station, a station that I too have been proud to serve from its conception in 1972 until the present day.

Great book this! Full of everything you'd expect from the RNLI. If you're interested in the lifeboats, yachting, fishing, the Argyll coast or just being on the water, then this is full of terrific stories about the 'little bay', its residents and the work that goes into running a lifeboat station. Absolutely brilliant!!
