Synopsis
A young woman learns the pleasure of totally subjugating her body to the man she loves. Based on Pauline Reage's best-selling erotic novel printed in 23 countries.
"Story Of 'O'" is based on the hugely successful S&M novel that has been read by millions of people worldwide. The author Pauline Reage tells the story of a beautiful young woman known only as 'O' who is taken by her boyfriend Rene to a chateau just outside Paris. There 'O' is trained in bondage and sexual perversion. 'O' is deeply in love with Rene and in order to prove her love she allows herself to be subjected to all kinds of degradation and abuse. Finally, Rene discharges a personal debt by transfering possession of 'O' to his stepbrother Sir Stephen.
In the film which produced in 1975, Just Jaeckin the director explores the cruel world in which 'O' finds herself. A world of sado-masochism and kinky and bizarre sexual practices.
The film was refused certification when it was originally submitted, has now been passed uncut by the British Board Of Film Classification.

3.0 out of 5 stars Supposedly 'uncut'? Pull the other one, 16 Feb 2004
By V. J. K. Lamburn "LilSerenity" (Worthing, WS, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The UK/US version of this film; is in many ways somewhat ludicrous for its cut, which does not compare to the original French version, which does indeed have English subtitles.

And let me say this now, get that version, not this one.

As the UK/US edit stands; it leaves many gaping holes in its poor dialogue dubbing, missing the sense of Réage's story, and at times makes very little sense indeed. The French version easily scores 5 stars for me on the basis it makes sense; and it is not cut.

However the film itself is Just Jaeckin's rendition of the seminal erotic novel, delving into a somewhat fantastical world of BDSM, it was after all written as a fantasy, not necessarily a depiction of real life. It is sensitive to the original novel, and excellently filmed, whereby it manages not to become gratitious in its depiction of 'the scene'.

It is most certainly worth viewing the French original, for its insight into the world of BDSM, although as with the book it is fantasy, but that clearly shows its faithfulness to the book, and is most certainly worth watching, and a valued addition to my DVD collection. Plus as a bonus you do get the original book with this edition, but then that is readily available on its own.

2.0 out of 5 stars disapointing cut, 22 April 2002
This dubbed version is far inferior to the subtitled original French version. I suspect that this is the release originally shown in the USA, but in any case it suffers for crucially cut scenes and poorly translated dubbing (often mangling the books original text). Sometimes cut scenes mean that the story jumps about and doesn’t make complete sense. Even the haunting score is ruined because of time changes from these cuts.
All the dubbed accents are American (even the supposedly English sir Steven) and Sir Steven is annoying called Sir Stephan (as if he was French) even though the original French soundtrack clearly pronounces his name ‘Steven’.
In the French version this is easily worth 4 stars (Even for die hard fans of the book like me). I advise any fans to wait for someone to release the original cut, or watch the film4 version.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing, 8 Jun 2005
By BS DAVIES "izzard7" (South Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had huge expectations of an erotic film that would remain in my memory for years to come. What I got was a hugely disappointing mess that had no direction or momentum, that would not have been out of place on the Channel 5 watershed spot. Quite frankly, if this was the film that got the pulses pumping, then I must have missed something. I assume the original French version with English subtitles changes this hyped up drivel to the raved about classic.
