My children absolutely love Mr. Gum and as we have now caught up with Andy Stanton's output we are forced to find something else to read. The Story of Matthew Buzzington is Stanton's first non Mr. Gum offering, about a boy who thinks he has the super power of turning himself into a fly. His repeated failure to do so means he ends up having a rough time at school with the local bully Pineapple Johnson.
There are some great Stanton touches in here, with programmes on television called things like 'how to win a million yogurts' and the odd throw away line which makes you howl with laughter, but on the whole this is a much more serious effort than Mr. Gum. There is a real message about bullying and how it affects children, and there is much less of the anarchic, slightly black humour of his previous work.
This seems pitched at slightly younger children. It is slighter than the Mr. Gum novels, and easier to read for children themselves. We enjoyed it, finishing it in one sitting, but it did not give us the same belly laughs and total immersion experience of Mr. Gum.
