My 4 year old son just brought his first book home from school to read and he was so excited. It was this book, and regretably, I read it to him shortly before bed time. He sobbed his heart out for over an hour until he fell asleep in my arms,still sobbing.
I understand the message that the book is trying to portray but it isn't a book I could recommend after our experience with it.

A beautiful story with a simple and poignant message. Although this might sound morbid to parents, 'A Story for Hippo' really does help explain about death and grieving to a young child in such a lovely way. It's a great story with bright and colourful illustrations that all kids and adults will love.

This is book is a great resource to share with children and adults that are dealing with loss. Monkey learns how he can keep the memory of Hippo alive in his heart by remembering all of their wonderful times together.
