This is a great two CD set covering the first year of the legendary Blue Beat label. Although the cover states "The Best in Ska" the music contained is a wonderful selection of pre-ska Jamaican blues, r&b doo-wop and shuffle. The sound quality is excellent throughout and the liner notes are superbly written and researched.

In Jamaica there is no such thing as Blue Beat. The name was coined in the U K in the 60s and began to reissue the sides first released on labels like Melodisc in the 50s and was of music which was Jamaica's attempts to copy American R & B (known as Shuffle in Jamaica) hence the lopsided rhythms which would lead to Ska and eventually Roots Reggae.
The label also issued some EPs one of which became the first to put out Richard Berry's Louie Louie about 8 years after its first appearance
