Product Description

Nine-tenths of the population emerge unscathed from the hurricane that devastates Dade County in Southern Florida. But who cares about them? For everyone else, the aftermath of the direct hit - homelessness, looting, destruction - is the second goldrush and the year's hottest scam. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The book: a romantic honeymoon in Florida is interrupted by a hurricane, and the newlyweds get involved with feral ex-governors, scamming roofing contractors, escaped zoo animals, con artists, mobsters and seductors of presidential families. A disaster for some provides great opportunities for others, and the inhabitants of Dade County as well as eager entrepreneurs from elsewhere are determined to take as many opportunities as they can get!

My opinion: Hiaasen in top form, hilarious as well as showing the venal scams and crooked schemes that prey on hurricane victims. A mix of a madcap movie plot and a furious attack on the people who are destroying a state he loves. Good characterization which makes the personalities plausible, an eye for the ridiculous and the real, and an ear for good dialogue - these are good books, ans stormy weather sits up there with the best of them!

You are forced to watch as normal everyday people are suddenly transformed by the aftermath of a tremendous (although not transcendent) hurricane. The plot is however a little more transparent than one might hope as most of the sequences occur in a very predictable fashion. This book does however make you think, about your life, and what would happen if... There are several scenes which will take you out of your seat, a characteristic more common today on screens than in books, but it happens here. It is an excellent read, and is quite difficult to put down, but most will see how the plots are interwoven quite quickly.

As a hurricane hurtles through Florida, a handful of unusual people react in peculiar ways. Honeymooning Max Lamb eagerly videotapes the wreckage but is soon kidnapped by a reclusive ex-governor called Skink. Meanwhile two hustlers try to stage an insurance scam, and Max's new wife hunts for him with the help of a millionaire who juggles skulls. Book contains strong language, some violence, and some explicit descriptions of an adult nature. Even with all that, this is a humors tale with a strange sense of justice.
