T-Bone Walker's legacy casts a giant shadow over modern blues. He exerted a major influence on many artists, including B. B. King, Pee Wee Crayton and Chuck Berry. T-Bone combined superlative guitar playing with a fine singing voice. Although the forties and fifties were his heyday, he never stopped touring. Bob Thiele, an experienced producer for ABC/Impulse (jazz) and ABC/Bluesway, recorded him in the late sixties (as they also did for B.B. KIng, Earl Hooker, Charlie Brown, etc.)

This CD compiles all the tracks which originally appeared on "Stormy Monday Blues" (1967) and "Funky Town" (1969). On these recordings, he is perfectly backed by veteran virtuoso Lloyd Glenn and by three other excellent younger musical hotshots: Mel London (gtr), Ron Brown(bs) and Paul Humphrey (dms). As usual for T-Bone, a good horn section is featured as well.

These are, actually, the last true jewels that T-Bone recorded before passing away in 1975. Here, he reprises some of his best known numbers but also proves able to modernize his blues, making it sound - indeed - funkier. He achieves this by using faster tempos and by giving a lot of room to his accompanists (particularly to Mel Brown's hard edged guitar sound). His voice, now huskier than before, perfectly complements the musical stew.

This compilation provides an interesting contrast to his previous, smoother and more sophisticated sides. However, the latter qualities have not been thrown overboard. The jazzy tinge of his earlier work remains apparent but does not dominate as much as before.

As could be expected, the sound quality on this Bob Thiele production is certainly more dynamic than the one found on his early 78's from the forties and early fifties.

An album to (re)discover without hesitation!

I've very mixed feelings about this one. The album was complied from sessions recorded by T-Bone for ABC-Bluesway and originally released on three albums: Stormy Monday Blues (1967), Funky Town (1968) and Dirty Mistreater (1973). I'm not sure if the last of these contained the last of T-Bone's recordings - there were other albums released in 1973 - but if not they were very close. MCA haven't exactly been helpful by not telling us which tracks come from which of the three original albums. Indeed from the research I've done they appear to be jumbled up. It would be nice to know since apparently there was a different production team on the '73 album with famed songwrighters Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller sharing the production duties and several significant jazz names present. The ones that I think come from the later sessions do have more sympathetic production even if they move away somewhat from the typical blues we associate with T-Bone.

Which brings me to my point. While the main man is on great form throughout even though he was in ill health, the production across many of these tracks is anything but sympathetic. Take the second track for example. Just when you're nicely getting in to it a massive raspberry comes from the combined brass and horns which detracts from T-Bone's front man work. Similar noises punctuate the rest of the session. The producer may have felt this was "modern" or jazz inclined but it's not, it runs counter to the flow of the number. These effects are not limited to this track alone. The other irritant is a kind of rikki tik rhythm effect that the producer uses on quite a few numbers - I can only assume that this was his idea of funk. Well it's not to me. At times it almost sets my teeth on edge.

Frustratingly there's evidence that they can get it right. The very last track (which I think comes from the `68 album), "I wish my baby would (come home at night) swings superbly. The horns are in the right place responding to T-Bone's lead guitar and vocal work. This is what a Texas Blues should sound like. The only criticism I have is that the horns are a little loud but I could live with that anyday. The only pity is that very few of the preceding tracks have this kind of feel.

I should exclude the title track from criticism. The backing on this one doesn't attempt any attention grabbing tricks and T-Bone delivers yet another version of his most famous number. I've got several in my collection but I'm always happy to have more.

Still the set is cheap so does offer a way in to T-Bone's work for only limited outlay.
