By ROROBLU'S MUM TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
With the Liz Phoenix Chronicles series, it took me a while to like the characters and make sense of who was bad and who wasn't, and the darkness and non-consensual stuff took a bit of getting used to. This book has an almost identical storyline, but with clearly demarcated goodies and baddies and the characters have less angst and darkness within them, which makes them more likeable.

This is the first in a new series, and we meet Janet, a half Navajo/half daughter-of-an-evil-Goddess-from-the- Beneath (the Beneath is literally under the ground on which we walk, accessible via cracks in the ground via
evil powers). She is a Stormwalker, able to harness the power of thunder, rain, wind and lightning and to use these for good, but Janet finds that she could be the harbinger and that at some point she will need to choose the right or wrong path.

She has been asked to Magellan, a small town where people are aware of the presence of witchcraft, magicks, shifters and the likes, to find out what happened to the chief of police's daughter. Five years ago Janet left her lover Mick, another non-human, when he refused to explain more about his background, history and frequent disappearances, but when she arrives in the town, which happens to be host to vortexes where her evil mother is trying to access earth in order to harness Janet's powers, he re-enters her life in order to protect her and eventually reveals that he never left it, though she has never been aware of this.

Like the Phoenix Chronicles, Janet's world is about good vs evil and making the right choices, but what I liked more here is that Janet and Mick could admit their feelings openly: they got misunderstandings and explanations out of the way and worked together, forgiving and accepting each other, and proving their love and devotion, thereby strengthening both of their powers and their relationship, giving them a stronger grounding for the many battles to come. They made love openly and with enjoyment, rather than in Liz's case where she was a sexual empath, forced to sleep with people to gain their powers and there were none of the dubious/almost non-consensual sex scenes, which made it lighter and more comfortable reading.

Allyson James is mainly known for her highly erotic menage tales, and there were some naughty dreams and possible hints of menage between Janet, Mick, Coyote the trickster God and Nash, the sheriff, but what appeared as a possible menage in her dreams actually turned out to be a non-sexual, affirming binding: Janet hugging Mick because she loves and needs him and he grounds her, and being hugged by Nash and Coyote who seem to have become her allies. Yes, it was a teaser, and I did wonder how menage could fit into this tale, as Janet had only ever been with and loved Mick, and I was pleased at the explanation - I have no problem with menage tales, but it has to be the right tale. With Janet and Mick, I was routing for true love conquering all, which it appears to have, especially when she goes Beneath to rescue him, but once he is freed, she has to call on his and his dragon powers to rescue her.

This tale was romantic, suspenseful and has made me want to read more in the next tale, where apparently Mick goes missing. Nash was described as enough of a hunk and an interesting character that I can't wait to find out who he ends up with; I hope it's with Maya, who's loved him for so long from afar. This is a great start to a new series, amd only loses a 0.5* as I felt that the tale could take stronger erotic scenes, rather than the hinted-at-more erotic-ish scenes that we got!

An ok read 12 Nov 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Janet Begay is a Stormwalker, her mother is a Goddess from Beneath who possessed a human white female to act as a surrogate mother, her father is a Navajo who has strong Earth magic running through his family. Janet has magic from both her mother and her father making her a Stormwalker. She can call a storms power making it her own but sometimes the magic is too volatile for Janet and the only other person who can control Janet and her storm magic is Mick the dark haired blue eyed mysterious biker. Janet's mother needs to harness her daughters power so that she can open up the Vortex between Beneath and Earth so that Janet's mother can escape. However Janet is intent on putting a stop to her mother once and for all.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book I had heard that it was a cross between UF and PNR. I can say having now read it I would class it as UF. I did struggle with the beginning of the book it didn't grab me straight away but I think that was more to do with me than the book as I had just finished a fantastic read prior to this. But friends kept telling me to keep with it and I'm glad I did, it turned out to be an enjoyable read. I liked all of the characters in the story, Janet and Mick are the main ones and throughout half of the book we don't know what the mysterious Mick is. I loved Maya the mouthy electrician and I would like to read more about her. There a few sex scenes n the book and thank goodness no mushy romantic dialogue. I thought there were quite a few holes in the story, like Janet suddenly having a piece of mirror in her pocket that saves her life. But if you ignore this and just accept such things for what they are it is ok. The plot isn't great but it does provide for interesting events along the way. At some times I found myself not being able to put the book down whilst at other times my mind did wander. I did enjoy seeing Beneath and wished a bit more time had been spent there. All in all I would like to give this book 3 stars. It is worth reading but I wouldn't be pushing it to the top of my tbr pile tomorrow either. Saying that I am interested enough to know more and will be reading the other books in the series at some point.

Love it when I find a new author that breathes new life into the paranormal genre. The other reviewer has done an in depth storyline so will try not to repeat. This is book one in a new series, I've never read Allyson James before & had prejudged the book before even reading & expected to read a generic paranormal romance. It's not!!
The premise, plot, characters are captivating & it was not the 'romance' that had my blood pumping but the supporting cast, action, & storyline. As well as the main protagonists Mick & Janet, the sheer stubborness, & fervour of the sheriff shone through, Maya an electrician who is bolshy, not a very nice person, I kinda related to. There's more colourful, in your face character's that enhance the reading experience, made me laugh at loud, and able to really get lost in the story.
I loved this book, because yes as well as good and evil, there's alot of grey areas, which cause dissention & problems, which gives rise to dilemmas, which in turn give depth.
It's a mystery, with police, magic, monumental battles, a pervy coyote & troubled love, with an undertone of eroticism written with a light hand.
From what I understand AJ as well as a well known eroticism writer also writes as Jennifer Ashley ( Immortals, Shifters & Highland Pleasures series) & Ashley Gardner (Captain Lacey series).
This writer looks like she's bursting out of her 'paranormal romance' lable, I would say she has one foot there & one foot in the true urban fantasy genre.
Enjoyed this book very much. Firewalker (Berkley Sensation), book two following Janet's & Micks adventure, which will go straight to the top of my reading pile when it arrives.
