With the Liz Phoenix Chronicles series, it took me a while to like the characters and make sense of who was bad and who wasn't, and the darkness and non-consensual stuff took a bit of getting used to. This book has an almost identical storyline, but with clearly demarcated goodies and baddies and the characters have less angst and darkness within them, which makes them more likeable.
This is the first in a new series, and we meet Janet, a half Navajo/half daughter-of-an-evil-Goddess-from-the- Beneath (the Beneath is literally under the ground on which we walk, accessible via cracks in the ground via
evil powers). She is a Stormwalker, able to harness the power of thunder, rain, wind and lightning and to use these for good, but Janet finds that she could be the harbinger and that at some point she will need to choose the right or wrong path.
She has been asked to Magellan, a small town where people are aware of the presence of witchcraft, magicks, shifters and the likes, to find out what happened to the chief of police's daughter. Five years ago Janet left her lover Mick, another non-human, when he refused to explain more about his background, history and frequent disappearances, but when she arrives in the town, which happens to be host to vortexes where her evil mother is trying to access earth in order to harness Janet's powers, he re-enters her life in order to protect her and eventually reveals that he never left it, though she has never been aware of this.
Like the Phoenix Chronicles, Janet's world is about good vs evil and making the right choices, but what I liked more here is that Janet and Mick could admit their feelings openly: they got misunderstandings and explanations out of the way and worked together, forgiving and accepting each other, and proving their love and devotion, thereby strengthening both of their powers and their relationship, giving them a stronger grounding for the many battles to come. They made love openly and with enjoyment, rather than in Liz's case where she was a sexual empath, forced to sleep with people to gain their powers and there were none of the dubious/almost non-consensual sex scenes, which made it lighter and more comfortable reading.
Allyson James is mainly known for her highly erotic menage tales, and there were some naughty dreams and possible hints of menage between Janet, Mick, Coyote the trickster God and Nash, the sheriff, but what appeared as a possible menage in her dreams actually turned out to be a non-sexual, affirming binding: Janet hugging Mick because she loves and needs him and he grounds her, and being hugged by Nash and Coyote who seem to have become her allies. Yes, it was a teaser, and I did wonder how menage could fit into this tale, as Janet had only ever been with and loved Mick, and I was pleased at the explanation - I have no problem with menage tales, but it has to be the right tale. With Janet and Mick, I was routing for true love conquering all, which it appears to have, especially when she goes Beneath to rescue him, but once he is freed, she has to call on his and his dragon powers to rescue her.
This tale was romantic, suspenseful and has made me want to read more in the next tale, where apparently Mick goes missing. Nash was described as enough of a hunk and an interesting character that I can't wait to find out who he ends up with; I hope it's with Maya, who's loved him for so long from afar. This is a great start to a new series, amd only loses a 0.5* as I felt that the tale could take stronger erotic scenes, rather than the hinted-at-more erotic-ish scenes that we got!
