The middle book of a trilogy set in a world where water is a scarce resource and must be manipulated by a group of people called Rainlords and Stormlords.
The story continues on seamlessly from the truly excellent first book.
Ms Larke has the ability to write beautifully and it is a pleasure to read her prose.
Her characters and the world they live in are described so well that it is simple to work out who's who, even though there are many, many people contributing to the story.
Her main protagonists are Shale, a Stormlord brought up in the desert and, in the first book, completely ignorant of his abilities, and Terelle, an orphan, originally a snuggery maid, soon to be promoted to snuggery woman once as she comes of age.
In this second book Shale becomes Jasper Bloodstone, a fully fledged Stormlord who is still, however , unable to move extract water from the sea without the aid of Lord Tanquar, his rival and bitter enemy.
Terelle possesses a different kind of water magic, she can paint the future events that she wants to occur, although sometimes the results are not what she wanted or expected. She and Shale become allies and their relationship develops into a romantic one, hindered only by the necessity for Shale to marry another rainlord in order to hopefully produce children with the ability to become the next generation of Stormlords.
Add to these two many other wonderful character, both noble and evil, and you have an extremely interesting book.
I'm looking forward to the final installment a great deal.
