3.0 out of 5 stars A good action read, 7 Dec 2004
By Gisli Jokull Gislason "Jokull" (Iceland) - See all my reviews

Although not a work of literary genius this book has its merits. It is set in the Warhammer 40.000 universe which is mostly a gaming universe although it has become a lot more. This book is special in that we see a conflict from both sides and you start to put your hopes on characters from opposing fractions. The strenght of this book is therefore you get to see the events from the standpoint of Chaos (Evil) as well as Imperials (Good). In it the Iron Warriors are my favorit and they are the bad guys.

It tells a story of a fantastic siege and the action is fast paced, battles are epic and there is room for character development here and there.

I enjoyed it and it should be read before Black Sun Dead Sky.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE Siege, 2 Feb 2004
It is refreshing to read a book in which the "mighty imperium" takes a beating. This book is all about a siege. Until the later stages of the story it is not very clear whether the Chaos Marines will break through the defenses or will be beaten back by the "traditional" last minute help( if that comes of course)...
There is a nice variety of warfare including tank and Titan battles. The battles are always bloody but the good thing is that until the final clash none can be seen as decisive.
An interesting point (also found in the novel "Dark Angel") is the imperial deceipt that will tip the scale...a nice touch overall.

Concluding this is an open minded book by the standards of Warhammer novels that is enjoyble to read again and again. The only drawback is the lack of intrigue. If you are into intensive battles go for it. If on the other hand you prefer novels such as Xenos and Hereticus then this book might not be the best choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Warhammer 40,000 book so far!, 14 Jan 2003
By Ryan J. Leask "ryanleask" (Shetland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, where war is constant and mankind fights for survival as its Empire slow crumbles.
The story is set around a siege against a mighty fortress. Evil chaos space marines the Iron Warriors (super humans who once fought for humanity but now are bent on its destruction or enslavement)attack and lay siege against the Imperial guard.
The characters are all very interesting and really grip your imagination. You feel you do care what happens to some of them as they come across from both sides of the siege.
The way how the siege progresis is exciting and not clear who will win, till the final of the book.
This book is one of the best I have read from Games Workshop, I couldent put it down as wondered what would happen next.
The final ending leaves big ramifications for the Warhammer 40,000 universe!
