A Storm of Angels is a direct sequel to the audio play Auld Mortality, the first in the Doctor Who 'Unbound' series, which features new actors playing 'alternate' Doctors separate from established Doctor Who continuity. Where Auld Mortality was a unique experience focusing on the Doctor's family background on Gallifrey, A Storm of Angels is a more traditional adventure, with the alternative 1st Doctor and Susan on the run from the Time Lords for interfering with history. This time it looks as though the Time Lords are right, as Elizabethan England now has an empire that stretches into space, and the Doctor and Susan find themselves stranded on Francis Drake's spaceship as it brings back a dangerous cargo from the Asteroid Belt. Unfortunately A Storm of Angels doesn't quite live up to the originality of Auld Mortality, as it gradually turns into a fairly typical tale of monsters attempting to invade the Earth, but it is a superior runaround filled with bizarre ideas. Bayldon makes a great 1st Doctor, and Carol Ann Ford gets a meatier role this time round as the play picks up on the fractured reality ending of Auld Mortality. If you enjoyed Auld Mortality you'll enjoy this, and if you though Auld Mortality was a bit too 'out there' you're likely to enjoy this more. Recommended.
