Silent they may be but these stones tell unusual and dramatic stories which we have a responsibility to preserve and remember. They deal with murder, sudden death, execution, human tragedy. They deal with passion, hatred, rivalry wrongful arrest, unsolved crimes, the vulnerability of young women. The book is about the things people do to other people.
The book has plenty of photographs and illustrations that try to bring these stories to life.. There are also directions and maps to show you how to find these unusual and neglected parts of our heritage in Wales.

I have tried to show how ordinary lives can take such unexpected and dramatic turns. How events can lead ordinary people into dramatic and unexpected situations. This is where true history lies. Not with huge national issues but with real people facing real dilemmas, not that much different from our own.

I was lucky to have Geoff Brookes as my english teacher in comprehensive school, way back when. He was a clear favourite, with a natural talent for "edutainment". This comes across in each of these stories, giving the facts in a interesting and informative way, in a warm, friendly and often humorous tone. He takes you past the facts to the real people, with real feelings and makes history human. Reading his words all these years later made me feel like I'd been reunited with a old friend.
Looking forward to the next volumes !

Great book! - Churchyards hold secrets......... and the author has uncovered dramatic and mysterious stories of murder, betrayal and intrigue. This fascinating glimpse into the nineteenth century lives of ordinary people in Wales, results in a compelling read and I certainly had trouble putting the book down. The author provides information on how to find the individual gravestones, which inspired him to unearth these long hidden tales, which is great for anyone wanting to reach the heart of each tragedy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope Geoff Brookes is out there researching more stories of real people. My advice is either buy it or find someone to borrow it from - you won't be disappointed.Stories in Welsh Stone: Volume 1: The Secrets within 15 Welsh Graves
