This review is from: Stories for Thinking (Paperback)
This book by Fisher is a treasury of useful stories carefully chosen to be used with children of Primary School age. Each story is followed by a selection of suggested questions and discussion points. These are ,to start with, comprehension, but go on to address inference and to require deep thought and discussion.Invaluable in the Key stage 2 classroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars An attractive, user- friendly book and highly recommended, 15 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Stories for Thinking (Paperback)
This book consists of thirty multi-cultural stories for children. The stories are not graded by difficulty but they are aimed at children aged from nine to eleven. The purpose of the stories is to stimulate thinking and questioning. Each story is linked to a key theme with examples of questions for discussion. There are also suggestions for follow-up activities.
Robert Fisher sees story as a fundamental way to expand thinking and regards Stories for thinking as a flexible resource to be adapted to suit the individual needs of a teacher and class.
I have read a selection of these stories to mixed classes ranging in age from 7 to 12. In each case the children were actively engaged (the stories are just the right length, according to the children), and lively discussions followed the reading.
"The mystery of the Marie Celeste" provided a great opportunity for younger classes to come up with ingenious theories regarding the ship's disappearance. In this case the children were much more interested in what happened to the ship than in the nature of mystery."Good in bad, bad in good" sparked off a lively discussion among older classes with the children exploring the binary opposites of good and evil and good luck and bad luck. Much time was spent seeking clarification of these concepts and giving examples from personal experience. "The bear who spoke" (Aesop), provided stimulation for discussion on the nature of friendship and loyalty among a group of 13 year olds including children from visiting schools.
Stories for thinking has a comprehensive introduction by Robert Fisher dealing with the use of story for teaching thinking, including discussion plans and building a community of inquiry. There are lists of further reading material and further information on working with children in this way.
This is an attractive, user- friendly book and I would recommend it highly as the "flexible resource" Fisher describes to anyone interested in working in a creative and innovative way with children.

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 19 May 2005
This review is from: Stories for Thinking (Paperback)
Comapred to his 'Games for Thinking' this is slighlty disappointing. I have found the stories uninspiring and some of the thinking points obscure. However, there are some great stroies which can be used for starting discussions. Buy it on offer - I wouldn't pay full price.
