Product Description

Product Description

Norwich Cathedral's magnificent roof bosses are one of the great hidden glories of medieval art. Over 1000 of these carved and painted keystones perch in the high stone vaulting, where they were placed between 1300 and 1515. Linked together in story-telling patterns they reflect a variety of subject - pagan, folk and Christian, the history of the world from the Creation to the Last Judgement, the Apocalypse, the early ministry of Christ and the life and death of John the Baptist. In quality and quantity Norwich's bosses are among the most impressive in Europe, while in their native arrangement they are entirely without parallel in the medieval world. Situated some 80 feet up from the floor of the Cathedral, the bosses of the nave and the transcept are too distant to have been fully appreciated by worshippers over the centuries. Until recently their character and detail has been discernible to only a dedicated few from special vantage points or through telescopes and binoculars. This book brings them to the general public through photographs, introduced and fully described in a scholarly text."

Back in the early 90's I was lucky enough to be in a group of art students led up into the nether regions of Norwich Cathedral and given a guided tour of the roof bosses by Martial Rose. The roof bosses really are a hidden treasure; even though they're in plain sight way up above your head they're so high up that it's impossible to make out much detail. Even higher up in the cathedral we were still craning our necks to see the bosses. This book is a fantastic way to see them without cricking your neck (or needing a telescope), and the accompanying text by an acknowledged expert does a great job of decoding the bosses for you - providing a much needed service you wouldn't get when wandering around Norwich Cathedral on your own.

One thing that is sadly lacking from this book though - a photo of the old bike someone somehow had managed to dump on top of the cathedral's enormous organ. God alone knows how they got it up there!

Fantastic book not only for lovers of Norwich Cathedral, old churches and stone carvings but also an excellent educational resource. It is an excercise in how to read a medevial church. The images are delightful. One cannot appreciate the beauty of the carvings to the same degree when seeing them in Norwich Cathedral on the distant ceiling.

Dotted on the ceilings of Norwich Cathedral are hundreds of stone bosses, some in the cloisters can be easily seen others are so high as to be invisible. This superb little book, wonderfully photographed and printed is a labour of love which makes the whole series accessible to us and opens up world long gone. I gave it to my Brother for Christmas but he lost it to his Wife who kept it for her own devouring for three days.
