More About the Author

I write full time from my home in Leeds, having moved there from Devon in late 2009. My short stories appear in various magazines including My Weekly Yours and Ireland's Own.

My main market is Take a Break/Fiction Feast where I use the pen name, Catherine Howard. She was Henry VIII's fifth wife (she lost her head). Henry and I share the same birthday (28th June) plus a tendency to keep marrying the wrong people.

I have a column in Writers Forum called Short Story Success where I pass on tips and encourage other writers of short fiction.
Before switching to fiction, I spent several years writing about tropical fish (care, breeding, behaviour etc) for magazines in the UK, South AFrica and the USA.
LAst year I tookd a break from short stories to write non fiction. My latest book, THE WRITER'S TERASURY OF IDEAS was the result. It's a teach-yourself-how-to -come-up-with-ideas guide.

I also give talks, judge and organise short story competitions as well as offering writing lessons by email and running a critique servce. In 2012 I will be teaching at Swanwick and the NAWG Festival of writing. I'm also running a residential course in Leeds (I'm told the food is amazing!).

My claim to fame? Winning the Weakest LInk in 2009.

5.0 out of 5 stars why short stories get rejected 10 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A sharp, to the point guide for writers looking to publish in magazines. There are hundreds of books on the market to help wanna be writers, but this e-book is concise with easy to follow guidelines which inspire and make you want to revisit your rejected stories. The book is inexpensive and does not waste words getting to the nub of the issues. Excellent value for money.

A useful approach to writing better short stories. It can't supply the one thing you are going to need above all others: talent.
