3.0 out of 5 stars A triumph of form over content 8 Feb 2011
By Nadia
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book is aimed at kids who are just starting to read for themsleves but although it looks promising, it is not going to light a fire in them. The premise of each story is nice, illustrations are good and lively and the vocabulary well graded but the text simply does not live up to the pictures. I found in all three stories that there was an excess of attention to tedious and irrelevant details and not enough drive or narrative thrust or characterisation. If you only have a few hundred words to tell your story it has to be tight - every word must count. If you take away the pretty pictures, this is deeply uninspired storytelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic for my bilingual child 4 Sep 2013
By kit
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have been searching for ages for some books to engage my just 8yr old boy. We live in France and so he speaks fluent French and English but finds reading hard work and is below his own age reading level in both languages and we havn't found a book yet that has engaged him enough (for his age) or been simple enough (for his level)to get to grips with and ignite that'desire' to read - until now. I bought three of these series one young reader books and last night my son told me he had read 10 pages - I even caught him picking it up at lunchtime and giggling about what he had read - I'm really hopeful it will continue so have just bought another 5 !
The pictures are bright and colourful and plentiful, the paragraphs are short so not too overwhelming but the text is not too easy and makes him work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok 10 July 2011
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book as I didn't have any pirate stories when my class decided they wanted pirates as a theme at school. Some of the stories are good. I personally don't think the book is big enough for a class so I have to read a page and then show any illustrations after. This book is good for anyone with children interested in pirates or as a first pirates book buy as it contains a few stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great children book! 7 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover
I bought the book for my younger brother who learns English, and he liked it a lot.
The book really well-balanced - every page has decent amount of text and colorful illustrations. Language is quite simple (though helps to learn some pirate slang) and reading is fun.

Personally I really like the illustration style which is very good. I can recommend this book to every child.
