Product Description

Product Description

Twenty-six A to Z stories, based on the twenty-six letters of the alphabet, question our moral compass: How do you judge a teacher toying with the sexuality of her teenaged student? A boy who decides to murder his mother? What thoughts rage inside a pedophile serial killer before he shoots himself? They challenge the concepts of beauty, truth, and morality, by revealing the face of the other side.

The stories focus on a crucial juncture when a character's life changes, for the better or worse, because of a choice or decision. Some of the characters in the stories confront death, others talk about life with its quirks and whimsies. Each voice, ranging in age from a six-year-old to a centenarian, has its own riveting story to tell. Together, this collection of stories at over 12000 words attempts to prove that when it comes to stories, depth can sometimes replace length and breadth.

Fantastic collection 31 Aug 2011
A fantastic collection exploring life and love and death and everything in between. The prose is rich and evocative, and it's well worth checking if you love sharp and snazzy literary fiction.

There's a wonderful mix of everything here, from the gritty and realistic to the dreamy and fairy-like. The author knows her stuff, and clearly, it shows.

A+ and two thumbs up.

D. Biswas's collection of flash fiction, each based on one of the 26 letters of the alphabet, is proof positive that good things come in small packages -- in this case, 26 small packages, each of which packs a whopper of a literal punch.

An abused child, a baby snatcher with a conscience, a vengeful parent, a closet lesbian in love with her best friend...Biswas adopts a colourful range of different personae in each story, exploring profound social issues in the space of a few hundred words. The writing is rich, the characters vivid, and the stories profound: each short left me deep in my own thoughts and pondering the implications long after I've put the book down.

If you like short, punchy stories that get straight to the heart of life and death, then this book is for you.

Short Story Treasures 5 Oct 2011

I'll admit, I procrastinated a little in reading this book because of its title, but let me be the one to let you in on D. Biswas' secret: It holds poetic writing of such depth that I had to reread passages just to let their sweet taste caress my mind again.

Such a pleasure, the subtle depths to which it teased my understanding of other perspectives. These short stories brought within its passages a bigger picture by spotlighting so many different points of view.

This book contains very short stories which bear a title of each letter of the alphabet. I guarantee you'll find yourself begging for more when it moves on to the next letter.

An example: `But her lipstick held back her lips, her bustier did an admirable job of keeping together her middle, and stockings and stays did the rest. She stayed within her skin and righted herself on her teetering heels.'

Edgar Allen Poe is considered to be the father of the modern short story and I'm certain he wouldn't be disappointed to see his legacy carried on in Biswas' collection.

I highly recommend this book to any who value the unique value of the short story. This book should be on shelves everywhere as an example of how to write such treasures.
A master of the genre 13 Nov 2011
By Guilie Castillo - Published on Amazon.com
D. Biswas is a master of the short fiction genre. She draws the reader into the story with a talent for descriptive narration that borders on the genius--why? Because she rarely describes per se. She builds the scene, the characters and the setting with sparse words, and yet the world she draws us into is real and palpable. Her characters jump off the page, bursting with life--with dreams, with desires, with shortcomings, with moral dilemmas.

A to Z Stories is the first short story collection I've read in a long time that I simply could not put down. Cannot wait for more of her work.
An artist who paints pictures with her words 8 Nov 2011

Bite-size literary snacks. The tasty kind. The kind you keep going back for more of when no one else at the party is looking. (And of all the snacks I've tasted at this party, I love N the most!)
