Whenever I have nothing to read, the first book my eyes fall on is always - "Stories from Jerusalem"
This book was origionally published as two separate books - My Grandmother's Stories and Golden Windows. Golden windows shares the same setting but tells more modern stories than "My Grandmother's Stories" In Golden Windows, a name is mentioned that is mentioned in My Grandmothers Stories and that fact suggests a connection between the two books.
My Grandmothers Stories is a collecton of tales that were told to the author by her grandmother. These include - "Bavsi's Feast", "The Faces of the Czar", "The Golden Shoes", "The Table Cloth", "A Tangle of Wools", "Saving the Pennies", "The Garden of Talking Flowers", "The Market of Miseries", "An over crowded house" and "A Phantom at the Wedding". My two favourites of these are: "The Tablecloth" and "The Market of miseries" The tablecloth is about the cleverness of a Rabbis Wife and The Market of Miseries tells us that if we are ever feeling miserable, we should think about all the miseries we could have and then realise how lucky we are.
The Stories in Golden Windows are: "Golden Windows - 1910", A Garden with Rabbits - 1912", "Beyond the Cross-Stitch Mountains - 1948", "Dreams of Fire - 1950", and "Cardboard Boxes full of America" My favourite of these is "Golden Windows - 1910" in which Pnina finds a wonderful shop that appears to have golden windows.
Anyone who reads this book will be amazed by it's simple charm.
