Product Description

Product Description

Originally released in 2000, Stories From the Silver Moon Cafe was the second album of original material to be issued on Mickey Newbury s Mountain Retreat label. In typical Newbury style, the album was inspired by and titled after a song that appeared on its predecessor, Lulled by the Moonlight , and featured much the same group of musicians, including Nashville legends Gene Chrisman, Roger Hawkins, Reggie Young and Mike Elliot, as well as guitarist Jack Williams, who regularly accompanied Mickey on live dates. Alongside twelve previously-unreleased Newbury originals, the album also features a new recording of Mickey s classic song Why You Been Gone So Long , which originally appeared on his 1973 album Heaven Help The Child and has since become a country music staple, as covered by the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Anita Carter, Jessi Colter and David Allan Coe. At first, the Silver Moon Cafe existed solely in Mickey s imagination until Mickey s friend Joe Gilchrist, who served as executive producer of both this album and Lulled by the Moonlight , decided to make it a reality and opened a venue by that name in Pensacola, Florida, which one of Mickey s home away from home. Gilchrist is also the owner of the legendary Florabama Lounge and founder of the Frank Brown International Songwriter s Festival, which hosts an annual Mickey Newbury Tribute at the Silver Moon Cafe. This new edition of Stories From the Silver Moon Café is housed in a digisleeve featuring stunning cover art by Oregon painter Robert S. Moyer and a 16-page booklet of lyrics.

Again, another re release of three albums that came out as limited editions in the late 90s and 2000. The album is beautifully crafted. Mickey's voice was just starting to show signs of age, more so in lower octaves but this is no criticism. He has revisited "Why have you Been Gone So Long " which was originally on "Heaven Help the Child". This version is more earthy and atmospheric, very good but I prefer the original. The musicians that form the Nashvillarmonic Orchestra are superb as always. I notice that that some of the sound effects used between tracks have been borrowed from previous albums. Altogether this is a real treat and I would have given this five stars except for the fact that the some of songs titles have been incorrectly programmed. So MP3 buyers beware if you are choosing one song only. The first track is a 20 second intro. Track 2 is "The Silvermoon Cafe". Likewise track 3 is "Lie To Me Darlin". The fault continues as far as track 5 which combines "Some Memories are Better Left Alone" and "Down n' Dirty" into a six minute track. However, this should not put you off from this wonderful album from one of America's greatest song writers. Enjoy.

This CD contains some difficult-to-find Newbury songs that are not in his box set. It's a great CD to purchase as a follow-up to the LULLED BY THE MOONLIGHT/CD which contains the gorgeous song "Silver Moon." As a side note, that particular song was written and sung by Toni Clay, who is the only artist that Newbury has ever invited to sing on one of his CDs. The SILVER MOON CAFE/CD was named after Toni Clay's song. You will not be disappointed in either CD; both are absolutely lovely.

Brilliance From One Of The Best 29 Jan. 2015

Mickey Newbury is one of the most underrated singers and songwriters to ever put pen to paper and voice to tape. He continues to astound on Stories From the Silver Moon Cafe. This is one of his last studio albums and shows the depth of his songwriting throughout this album. He writes of aging in " Twenty Years and Sweet Dreams Ago " where he writes ' I saw myself in the mirror just the other day I saw the lines of age and the signs of rage in my face'. If you want intelligent thought provoking writing with excellent instrumentation, this is the record for you. He has no problem going from a serious piano, viola, and cello ballad with soulful vocals to a rocker like" Down n' Dirty". It is still his lyrics and heartfelt delivery that truly stirs the soul. I discovered Mickey and his music later in life and my only regret was not seeing him in person although there are more than a few live sets available. There are very few artists that have blessed my life in the way Mickey has with his music. He even wrote the perfect anniversary song that appears on a previous album. The song is ' After All These Years' and is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
