When I was a young child in the early Sixties, one of my favorite series of books was the Oxford Myths and Legends series. I still have the Chinese Myths and Fantasies volume I got as a Christmas gift in the second grade (much to the puzzlement of my classmates). There were many others which I checked out of our public library and read. When I saw that this new series was being published, I immediately purchased this volume, as well as the Scottish and Irish myths and legends, for my eight year old daughter (and as he grows a little older, my five year old son). The stories are well told, the illustrations excellent, and I have always viewed these books as entertaining and easy to digest windows into other cultures (especially those non-british or Irish in origin), and insight into times long before not just electronic media but even the widespread availability of printed books, when a culture's stories were part of an oral tradition. This series gave me a broader outlook on the world and will do so, I believe, for my children. I recommend this volume, and the others, and I look forward to more books being published in this series.
