I can't figure out why they said this book is for young children. The stories contain numerous graphic killing/battle scenes with impalings and decapitations. Several stories contain or end with immoral actions that are left unresolved.
Some of the bad stories:
- A god carelessly kills a dwarf, brings the body to the dwarf's father, who says that the god can repair some of the wrong by paying his dead son's weight in gold.
- A son kills his father out of greed.
- A dragon is maimed by a knight, humiliated and turned into a pet.
- A father dragon and his children are tricked by being invited to a feast, where they eat too much and are later ambushed. The father dragon is killed leaving the children scattered, alone and afraid.
- Angry, violent gods create and kill dragons out of revenge and a desire to kill each other.
- A brother goes to save his sister from a dragon with a magic flute that forces animals to dance. He finds the dragon and forces it to dance over a lake. The dragon begs and pleads for its life, but the brother makes it dance until its strength gives out and it drowns!
A few good stories:
- Two brothers work to marry a princess, who ends up with the honest brother.
- Three soldiers who nearly become a dragon's slaves because of greed, but escape and learn their lesson in the end.
- A man catches a dragon while fishing, the dragon convinces him to release him, and later rewards the man with bountiful fish catches.
I'm rating it with 2 stars because of the few good stories and the very well done illustrations.
