Mayra Andrade's sophomore release Storia Storia is a decidely more jazzy affair. A few Cuban / latin grooves in there, different arrangements with backing vocals, flutes, horn sections and even strings on one of the ballads.

Usually when I hear the word "strings" my skin starts to crawl, but fortunately here it's not the overdone, schmaltzy string sections that plague a lot of modern jazz albums (see Diana Krall's latest effort). The strings are very understated, dry in the mix and they blend in well with the other instruments.

Mayra's voice has further matured since Navega. Her singing simply takes you on a musical voyage.

The songs are varied, yet the album has a very good flow. If anything, I'd say the songs are less "catchy" than on Navega. I'm guessing this album takes more time for the songs to sink in, but that's not a problem at all. When the music's this good, I don't mind listening to it again...

I saw Mayra Andrade at the Theatre Royal, Norwich by accident. She stood in for the Fadisto Mariza when she fell ill and had to cancel. Serendipity struck, her voice blew me away and her backing band were superb. I highly recommend this album. It's relaxing but intersting at the same time. Oh, and she's really pretty too.

If there was any justice in the world Mayra Andrade would be top of the charts. She's got everything - the voice, the songs and the looks. If you like real heartfelt music beautifully sung buy this record and go and see here live - you won't be disappointed!

Interesting experimentation on traditional music. Captivating sounds. The way she uses her voice is trully amazing. Sonically impressive! Really beautiful music!
