About the Author

Brian & Janet Stoppee own M2 Media Studios, Inc., based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, west of Washington, DC. Before buying a few rural acres, they owned studios in Richmond, Virginia and New York City. Brian has his bachelor's degree from Lock Haven University, where he studied lighting and theatre design while doing photography, advertising, public relations, and producing shows for the Sloan Fine Arts Center. He majored in fine arts and minored in communications. Janet has her bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware in Visual Communications where she studied advertising, photography, and illustration with some of the advertising community's finest. They've been using computers long before the Macintosh was introduced and had version 1.0 of many of the software applications that have become a mainstay of image-making production. Brian's first book, "The Photographer's Guide to Using Light” has sold over 90,000 copies. With illustrations by Janet, it was the first project they worked on together. In 1995 they pioneered weather and the environment in the web and on the air at NBC, in Washington.

"As a site that explores photography through the lens of lighting, Strobist is necessarily overweighted in technique. But technique as an end to itself is almost certainly doomed to yield boring, meaningless photos." That was David Hobby in a moment of self-criticism on his 'Strobist' blog. Saved me a lot of writing. It's not something I'd accuse David Hobby of, but it's a fair description of the photos in this book.

I can read many American-language books without noticing. This wasn't one of them. The authors in attempting to be chummy relapse into the vernacular. I learned that in American 'the mutts' is not a compliment, that 'sports car' refers to a pantechnicon (judging by what they claim to get in the boot) and best of all that 'talent' is an acceptable term for referring to a young lady. But a lot of it just whizzed past me - it seemed pretty inconsequential. And finally, for the European reader the imperial system of measurement is used exclusively and suppliers seem to be mostly US ones.

All this I could forgive if the book had much to offer. It doesn't. It comprises two parts
- photography for 15 year olds
- lighting for millionaires

You'll like this book if:
- you're eight years old and don't mind being patronised
- you're a native speaker of US English and understand all the homely / homey expressions that leave me all at sea
- your rich uncle has left you half a million pounds / euros / dollars and you have a very large truck to carry the kit between the aircraft hangars you'll be shooting in

There's a lot of blatant product plugging and indeed the kind reviews on the back cover are from the people whose gear they are plugging. Every time an example is given rather than saying "a 105-mm macro lens" they insist on giving the full Nikon product reference.

There's not much book here. Write off the first third if you know one end of a camera from the other. Of the remainder the right-hand pages are deeply dull commercial images. Of the left-hand pages one third is given up to crediting themselves for every photo in the book, to Mr Adobe for his wonderful Photoshop and for every piece of equipment they used down to the Blu-tak and drawing pins. OK, slight exaggeration.

At the end of it - I ground through every wretched page - I knew no more about lighting than I did at the start. It is a guide mainly to gear that I (and I suspect you) can't afford, not so much about actual light and its role in photography. Unless you are a millionaire and want to go into very boring commercial photography just go into Calumet and get some good advice and watch some Dom Bower videos on You Tube.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate & Fact Filled Book 24 Dec 2008
By John F. Hagarty - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
After reading this informative book I was impressed how accurate and educational it is. This will be one of my regular "go to" photo guides, especially given its emphasis on the importance of lighting.

I was struck how a previous reviewer was misinformed about the CMOS sensor issue. Nikon has been using the sensor since September 2004. Moreover, Pentax and Sony have also adopted the technology. In fact, the book is a cover-to-cover encyclopedia given its comprehensive discussion of the subject matter at hand.

Another feature of the guide is its readily understandable copy that is accompanied by copious artwork and photographs, highlighting each subject. Additionally, the softcover format is designed for ready reference...simply lay it on any surface and read with your camera in hand--sweet.

After having read & enjoyed the book, I intend to gift a copy of it to a budding photographer friend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good but too much content specific to Nikon 5 Dec 2008
By S. Burns - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Very good book and easy to read. Excellent content broken into small segments.

Only complaint is that much of the "how to" content is specific to Nikon DSLRs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive 28 Nov 2008
By R. L. Quinn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
While the title uses the word professional, don't let that scare you. It starts with the very basics and moves on to more complex information that is helpful to photographers of all skill levels. It is written with an eye towards both the technical and the artistic parts of the craft and in language that is easy for the non-professional to understand. It challenges you to become a better photographer and encourages you to challenge yourself.

It helped me not only look at objects differently but also to see differently especially when looking through the lens. I really look forward to putting many of the lessons to use. For anyone who wants to go from taking pictures to creating photographs, this book can start you on that path and travel it with you as you expand your knowledge, improve your technique and grow as an artist.
