Book Description

11 Jan 2011
A stop order is an essential tool used for money management and risk limitation, but for many investors and traders it is not terribly well understood. The author begins by presenting a thorough survey of the various stops available, including buy and sell stop orders and trailing stop orders. This provides a vital introduction for beginners, and a handy reference guide for those more experienced. Having described these tools, Stop Orders then moves on to examine their practical applications by explaining how to use the different stop order techniques when making your trades in the markets. The book is illustrated throughout with charts for stock indices, individual stocks, commodities and foreign exchange currency pairs to provide a range of real-life examples. This book covers everything you need to know about stop orders and how to make them work for you. Whether you are a trader, an investor, or a spread bettor, you should regard the stop order as essential in helping you lock in your profits and succeed in the markets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Start With Stops! 9 April 2010
This is an excellent book. The various types of stop orders are very clearly explained and their application is clearly shown on real world charts. I'd thought only of the 'stop loss' before reading this book, but Tony has shown me how I can use stop orders to enter trades as well as exit, and how to protect my profits as well as minimise my losses. There is also some very useful information on how the market makers can move a price temporarily and how you can avoid being stopped out unneccesarily. Furthermore, the principles in this book can be applied whether you choose to day trade, swing trade, or position trade. In summary this book can give you some extra tools for your trading toolkit as well as some excellent money management tips, which all contribute towards having an edge in trading. Reccomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stops, stops and more stops! 6 Feb 2010
Most novice traders and spread bettors think the stop (loss) order is a way to get out of a trade when the market has gone against you, as Tony explains, this is just the beginning and stops can also be used to enter trades, preserve profit and limit downside risks.

It's hard to think of another book that I have read that exerts so much time and energy to thoroughly making sure that the reader understands the concepts that are covered. Tony Loton's style is to give an example, demonstrate it in a stock market example and then dedicate further real-world examples in the second half of the book to help the reader really get to grips with the advantages of understanding and correctly applying stop orders.

My only slight caveat is the 'stop with limit' principle, which to me sounds like a quick route to the poor house! Apart from that an excellent book, thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why you need this Book 20 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Whether you Spread Bet or Buy & Hold, one thing's become increasingly clear. Capital Preservation and Cost Management often differentiate the winners from the losers.

Think you're already aware of all there is to know about capital protection and enhancement using Stop Losses? Then I suspect your're mistaken, and that you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish armed with the information in Tony's Book.

Even if you take away just one useful tip, over time it could easily pay for your investment in this book many times overs.

So ask yourself, can I really afford to miss out on the savings / additional gains that an exceptional knowledge of this very important topic could deliver?

A great book by a guy that doesn't just 'talk the talk'. (I sometimes bump into Tony on the SpreadBettingCentral Website Forum, where I pay 'very' close attention to what he has to say).

5.0 out of 5 stars Much more than the stoploss 29 Mar 2010
This is an excellent book, it is written in a style that is very easy to read, it is amusing as well as informative. I have used stop loss orders in the past, but this book explains that there is much more to stop orders than just the stop loss. It explains very clearly all the different ways in which a stop order can be used and what the advantages and disadvantages of each one can be. It gives some excellent examples showing how they can work well, but also examples of how they can appear to fail, with suggestions of what could be done to improve the strategy.
Many books seem to concentrate on how to select the right instrument and how to enter a trade or investment, but give very little help about how to manage the trade after entry. I found this book very helpful because it deals with exactly this problem area. It gives some very helpful advice on how to use stop orders whatever style of trading or investment is being undertaken. I am definitely planning to use stop orders far more and hopefully far more effectively after reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended read for traders and investors alike 21 Jan 2010
By Harry
As the name suggest the book is all about stop orders. However if you are only thinking a stop order is used to stop a loss think again. This book takes you through all the different types of stop orders that are available and gives you an application for each and much more.

Removing emotion from trading is a big step on the path to success. As someone that is still fairly new to trading I have been learning this the hard way. If only I had read Stop orders several months ago I could have save myself money on losing trades. Stop orders takes you through the use of each type of stop order allowing you to remove any emotion from your trades. It gives you several excellent strategies for the use of stop orders and has some good examples of successful pyramiding using stop orders.

It covers other topics such as trading timescales, price gaps and takes you through some perfect and imperfect trades illustrating the use of stop orders and their potential. I would recommend this book to any trader or investor.

Even if you think you understand stop orders, take a look at this -- it opened my eyes to possibilities which are now being used in earnest to earn profits, where before I was chalking up consistent losses.
