Product Description

Growing up on a small, struggling farm on the outskirts of Sunderland in the early 1900s, Polly Farrow has a tough life, but she has gifts money can’t buy – a joyful disposition and a loving heart. And her heart belongs to her beloved cousin, Michael. Polly knows that one day they’ll be man and wife. But a terrible secret is to change everything: Michael is her half-brother, the fruit of an incestuous relationship between her father and his own sister – Michael’s mother. The lovers are rent apart and Polly is left to bear the responsibility of the farm alone – for her father kills himself, unable to live with his shame. Life is now a battle for survival, and Polly wonders if she will ever find happiness. But the answer to her prayers is closer than she thinks...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Characters, and Unbelieveable Hardships, 18 Aug 2002
By Imperial Topaz (Marrakesh, Morocco) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I found this book initially a little hard to get into because there were a lot of characters and I had trouble keeping them straight. Also, the "country dialog" didn't appeal to me, although to most readers, it probably would seem more realistic.

After the first three or four chapters,I found the book much easier to read, and was really captivated by the story. The book opens with a brother and sister involved in incest. Later, two cousins fall in love and want to marry, until they find that they are really half-brother and half-sister (the result of the earlier incestuous union), which destroys both their lives. The book follows mainly what happens to the girl. The girl undergoes unbelieveable hardships, but always maintains her good character. The book keeps you reading until the end--it is hard to put down. And the end is very satisfying, yet realistic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heart warming story, that will intrigue you, 14 Aug 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Stony Path (Hardcover)
This book is well written, with characters that are loveable and realistic.

This is the first book I have read by Rita Bradshaw but I will be reading more.

The story plot is so heart warming and intriguing that it will keep your attention to pages right up to the end.
The story is based around young Polly Farrow, who has a tough life but has a loving personality and looks.
She is in love with her cousin Michael and they both believe that they will marry one day. But a terrible secret is to shatter their dreams.
Polly is left to bear the responsiblity of the farm and family.

Will she ever find true love? Can she survive and find true happiness? You'll have to buy it to find out.

5/5 for Rita Bradshaw. Brilliant writer.
