what a great read 19 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
My only regret with the Goodkind books is that I found them when I was aged 73 years, and then only because I had watched The Legend of The Seeker on TV. Masterful, imaginative plots that generate surprise after surprise and a whole new civilization unfolds before your eyes. Not Tolkien, but extremely enjoyable!!! I have 12 more books to go. Hope I live that long!!!!

Warning : Some Spoilers!

Better in some respects than Book 1, possibly as the author matures alongside his characters. Overall this is an enjoyable yarn but the initial pace of the plot is so slow it borders on lethargic followed in the final third of the book by a change of pace to the other extreme.

There are irritating elements - For the first 200 pages there's a lot of declarations of eternal love coupled with the complete failure to get married. For the next 400 pages Richard literally fails to understand anything that ANY other character utters. Indeed the first time Richard actually admitted to understanding something, I almost fell off my chair. Nonetheless, the Sisters of the Light and the culmination of the book in and around the Palace of the Prophets is not half bad. Three stars for Mr Goodkind!

The Stone of Tears is the second book in the Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind. Influence of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings are still quite prevalent in the series, with the introduction of 'force' powers. The annoying thing about this book, as was in the case in the previous one, is that the characters seem to be on an emotional pendulum, with every show of love and hate over-emphasised, as if set on the stage of a pantomine. The other annoying thing is that the characters seem to get ever more powerful, to the point of becoming ridiculous when they struggle with achieving small things, and doing big things effortlessly.
Aside from these bugbears, the story takes on some interesting twists with the introduction of the Sisters of Light (Jedi Nuns) who have been penetrated by the Sisters of Dark (Sith Nuns). Kahlan leads a band of young men against an Imperial army and Zedd loses his powers due to the machinations of the Keeper (the Devil). Its a long book, but the plot twists sustained me through it, although there is a lot of nudity and violence towards women that I found somewhat distasteful. Still, if you enjoyed the first book, there is no reason not to pick this one up too.

Absolutely brilliant Terry Goodkind
Keeps sending you in different directions with regards the story, characters. Very impressive, sometimes radical in its foretelling and very close to the edge for young readers. Read more
