But a local legend predicts disaster as time grows short—unless the warrior and the maiden can conquer stubborn pride and give in to the power of love.

Format:Mass Market Paperback
Set in Medieval Scotland,a tall, grey, granite pillar lies at the heart of this novel along with the backdrop of a feud between two clans that has spanned centuries. The ancient attack of the woman of one clan by the man of the other,is where the feud and the statue originate. The woman, the heroine's ancestor, cannot be saved and so faeries preserve her soul by transforming her into The Stone Maiden. That same enchantment prevented a man of the murderer's clan, the MacNephtans, from harming a woman from Clan MacLaren again.Alainna is head of this clan, which now, after years of fighting their enemies, consist mainly of elderly men and women. For a little while, she is protected, but the seven hundred year old enchantment upon the Stone Maiden is about to run out and therefore,Alainna petitions the King for help . What she wants is a Celtic Champion to protect her people and ensure their bloodline is not lost by giving up his own name and also allowing their subsequent children to take her name, not his. What she gets is the stable military might of a Norman Knight who speaks Gaelic -Sebastien le Bret, a man of dubious background. He was a foundling, raised in a monastery who has won his position in Court by sheer grit and determination.Within the character of Sebastien, one of the themes of the book comes into play ; he wants to belong . He knows little of his parentage and because of this was never accepted by the parents of his late, first wife with whom he has a son.He envies Alainna, who is a stone carver and is able to preserve centuries of her clan's rich heritage into stone tablets to endure forever.Alainna quotes an incantation which haunts him for the rest of the novel :"I am weary and I am a stranger.......Be my wings til I find my home". 1.0 out of 5 stars A difficult read 16 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I never stop reading a book once I start reading but I am sorely tempted to with this one.
However what leads me to continue reading is the interesting storyline which develops well, the writing is really good, but so many proofreading errors can be off putting. And a Highlander saying "sirrah" especially a clan leader...sorry, it would never have happened!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolutely Wonderful Read! 17 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Love medieval romance and have to say there are so many different levels of writing in this genre, some good, some not so good. However, this was in a class of its own. Such a depth to the writing and I absolutely fell in love with the two central characters Ailanna and Sebastien. If there were only more writers like Susan King. Have now begun The Swan Maiden.

I think the one star comment about the use of 'Sirrah' was a little harsh and nit-picky. This is not the first book of its kind where I have read the word in dialogue. The internet interpretation is - 'used as a term of address for a man or boy, especially one younger or of lower status than the speaker.' As far as Ailanna was concerned, she was the clan leader, they were in her native Scotland and therefore she probably believed herself of a higher status than a Norman knight like Sebastian. Also when it was used it was in situations where she was angry with him, so maybe she was being deliberately provocative. If it was an incorrect term, as far as I'm concerned it not matter - in no way did it spoil my enjoyment of this excellent book.
