Review

Lieutenant Peter Decker of the LA police has a disturbing call from Rabbi Jonathan Levine, Decker's recently discovered half brother. There has been a murder in Jonathan's family; his brother-in-law, a Hassidic Jew and former drug addict, has been found naked in a seedy Manhattan hotel, a gunshot wound to his head. And his niece, 15-year-old Shaynda, is missing. Called on to help his new-found relatives through this terrifying time, Decker journeys to New York to track down the missing girl. He finds himself in an alien city and a maze of deceit, on a journey that takes him from the slums of New Jersey to the hidden meeting places of Hassidic outcasts. This is Kellerman at her sharpest, building on the breakthrough of her highly successful The Forgotten. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format:Paperback
Having read all of Kellerman's Decker series this book was eagerly awaited. However, like the last I found it quite disappointing. Unlike the tour de force of say, Serpents Tooth, I felt we were very much rehasing familiar ground. Again Decker is caught up searching for a young Jewish relative from New York, we have been here before Kaye...
On unfamiliar ground Decker struggles to investigate the case and enlists the help of a young pyschopath Chris Donatti to help him out. This seems little more than a device to involve Rina more in the story as the psycho in question has a yen for our detective's wife. Kellerman seems intent on beefing up Rina's story in her recent books.
I still enjoyed the disection of Jewish culture but found the ending unsatisfactory as it seemed to happen by accident not by detection, a trait which I find common to both Kaye and Jonathan Kellerman. Could do better

After reading several of Faye Kellerman's books (including Stalker), I always find her slow to start.... but when she does - she does. This book is no exception. From chapter 20 onwards it's a can't put the book down case!!

Knowing the author from previous books kept my interest going throughout the start - but new people to this book would have been tempted to give up!

Keep reading through - as it does get better!

Rina Decker, the heroine of this book is infuriatingly smug, and when the villian is moved by her beauty, goodness (and religious knowledge!) I wanted to be sick. This was just one of the many moments in the book that were completely unbelievable.

However, I read the book to the very end so Kellerman must have some ability to keep her reader interested.

It would be interesting to see perfect Rina cope with one of her sons coming out as gay or -worse- wanting to marry a non-jewish girl but I can't see Kellerman being brave enough to face those issues.
