Book Description

When Catherine Wilson sets out to trace her family tree, she is taken aback when her great-aunt tells her about a murder, in which their family was supposedly involved, that had happened many years previously. Catherine requests the assistance of Madeleine Porter, family history researcher, and her friend and fellow researcher Ian Clay, to investigate this claim. Their enquiries reveal the shocking truth behind the tale; and the account, as related in an old journal, of two quite different Victorian families, divided by class, but connected by death.

More About the Author

John Nixon was born in Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire. After a career working for a high street bank, and then owning his own bookshop he turned to writing, and published his first novel 'Family Shadows' in 2012. This was followed in 2013 by 'The Cuckoo Clock' and in 2014 by 'Stolen Futures'. All the books are crime and mystery stories with a dash of genealogy thrown in, reflecting his interest in family history. Madeleine Porter appears as a minor character in 'Family Shadows', but is the main character in the other two.

John is married with four grown-up children and three grandchildren, and lives with his wife in rural Herefordshire.

Good book. As someone who has researched my family history I found it very true the way facts can be uncovered through different sites. Many documents can be found and slot into the story you are researching. I always found a great excitement and satisfaction each time this happened. Thi s book was recommended on Lost Cousins and well worth a read

I really enjoyed the human side of the history research. I guessed the final outcome, half way through, but it was still a good read, with reference to using particular websites, that I use myself.
I would recommend it to expert as well as novice Family History researchers.

Two stars for writing a book. That's the best I can say. It's like the outline for a bigger book that needs lots more padding. Everything and everybody are a bit stilted and dated. I'd started so I finished but I was very glad to get to the end. If in doubt don't bother......

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Book by this author 18 Jan. 2014

I was delighted to discover that John Nixon has written a new book as I have thoroughly enjoyed all of his other titles.

This book is also a genealogical detective story, using the same investigator (Madeleine Porter) as in his previous books. The story has interesting twists and turns and is fast moving - I was gripped from beginning to end! The characters are likeable and from my own experience of family history research the research undertaken in the book is spot on.

Its also nice to read a book written by an English author, and a well written book at that!

My only gripe is that John Nixon doesn't write quickly enough - please write a book a week!

3.0 out of 5 stars could have done with a bit more sparkle 4 Sept. 2014

On the whole, not a bad story. A steady build up to the story end. Quite well put together really. Anyone who likes genealogy stories will like this as an easy read. Perhaps a bit bland, lacking excitement possibly.

This book has been added to my list of books to read while on holiday. I like books that have a little genealogy and a little detective work, I believe it helps when doing my research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent read 28 Jan. 2014

ANother excellent book by John Nixon. I found it more complicated than the previous two books but as a family tree buff I found it very interesting, totally relating to it all. I just hope that there is a fourth book being written right now. Anyone that loves Family History will totally enjoy this book and anyone that is thinking of embarking on such a journey will learn the basics.
Can,t wait for for the next book.
