Let me make this point very clear first of all: this book is not the next instalment in The Drake Chronicles, as Amazon seems to think it is. The worlds established in The Drake Chronicles and in this book are completely different, so there is no way to connect them together. I actually bought this book as I thought that this would be the next book in The Drake Chronicles.
That aside, this is quite a good book. I'm not going to lay out the storyline - there is already a product description and I don't want to repeat anything already mentioned, nor do I want to reveal any spoilers accidentally. The book centres around Eloise and Jo in point-of-view chapters that alternatively flicker from one girl to the next, which seems to be a technique Ms. Harvey likes to adopt, as it's seen through all of the books I have read by her (which is by no means all of them). The characters of Eloise and Jo themselves are quite similar to the characters of Solange and Lucy in The Drake Chronicles, but that's only because they are very determined, head-strong teenagers, which coincidently helped me to get into this book quickly as it is always good to read a book with such strong female characters. Though as much as I enjoy to read about strong, female leads; nothing can beat the gorgeous bad-boy, and this book certainly has the perfect bad-boy in the form of Eldric (again, I won't mention much about him as I don't want to reveal any spoilers).
And this book, unlike many out there, doesn't solely focus on the girls' relationships with the new guys in their lives. Yes, quite a bit of it is focused on this, but there is more than enough dark periods to make up for this fact, with the notorious reputation that mythology has held for centuries about the Fey and their world. Obviously, this brutality is watered down a little, as this is a Young Adult book, but it is still dark enough to get the message across clearly. I am now looking forward to the next instalment in this series, because there has to be a sequel to such a good book, even though I started out a little disappointed that it wasn't what I thought it would be.
If you are a fan of The Drake Chronicles, as I am, then this is yet another good book by the talented Ms. Harvey, and I would recommend that you read it. For those of you that haven't read The Drake Chronicles, I strongly recommend those, too; as Ms. Harvey definitely provides a unique version of the vampire mythology, with the first in the series linked below.
