There is a magnet with the image of the Mona Lisa on our refrigerator (purchased at a museum store), and my six-year-old asked me about the painting the other day. We looked up information on the web, and then came across this book at our local library. The intriguing title had us both excited to read more about it, and I'm glad we did. The story is written in an entertaining fashion, recounting the story of how the Mona Lisa painting came to be, and the adventures she had. The story is told from the painting's point of view, which makes for a fun and engaging read. The painting recounts her origins, how she came to be as the result of Leonardo Da Vinci's artistic genius (inspired by the young Italian, Lisa Gherardini), and how she came to live in France under the reigns of various kings, until Napoleon eventually donated her to the Louvre Museum in Paris.
My daughter and I enjoyed reading about the theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre, recounted in a suspenseful manner, and had my young child closing her eyes, hoping nothing bad would befall the adored painting. Happily, all ends well, and the illustrations by Jill McElmurry coupled with the humor-infused text by Ruthie Knapp make this a delightful yet informative read. If only most history texts were written in such an entertaining manner!
