Bach the Romantic 22 April 2005
Format:Audio CD
Leopold Stokowski believed that Bach was the first romantic composer whose only problem was the lack of the orchestral technology available to Brahms, Bruckner and Wagner.

He set about "putting matters right" by arranging Bach for the full symphony orchestra, and, in this second volume of Chandos recording of his transcriptions, you can hear his theory put to the test.

The great thing about Bach's music is that it stands up to all sorts of arrangements: whether it is Jacques Loussier or Stokowski, authentic/period instruments, or von Karajan conducting the B minor Mass as though it had been written by Brahms, the greater glory of this transcendant music shines through.

OK it sounds like Wagner/Bruckner - only more so in the very high standard of recording we get from Chandos - but for me Stokowski scored a direct hit.

Six stars, please Amazon!

PS: Don't forget to buy Volume One.

Very good, but the Naxos releases are better 16 Dec 2009
By Roderick Keech - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This, the second installment of Stokowski's Symphonic transcriptions of Bach's (mostly organ) works is very good indeed, but I think the Naxos volumes recorded with the excellent Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Stokowski: Bach Orchestral Transcriptions, Stokowski: Bach Transcriptions, Vol. 2, are better both acoustically and in price, with comparable repertoire.

Don't get me wrong, the Chandos issue is very good, but when a direct comparison is made, even disregarding price, I still would opt for the Naxos editions. They even sound better than the Chandos SA-CD collection of several conductor's orchestral transcriptions Bach: The Conductors' Transcriptions [Hybrid SACD], despite the higher resolution and surround sound that the SA-CD format offers, which is quite a feat.

So, if you are looking for the best sounding versions of Stokowski's Bach transcriptions, listen to the excellent Naxos red book CDs.
