Product Description

Product Description

It’s a hot and steamy summer in New York. You could fry an egg on the sidewalk and melt your brains on the subway platform. There’s a crime wave involving blood banks, a philosophical parrot and all too many super-friendly dog-people in Tompkins Square Park. Willie is hanging on to what’s left of her equilibrium until she realizes that the man living next door is a vampire.

Written in journal entries, emails and voice mail messages — the contemporary versions of the dairies and letters that told the original Dracula story — Bram Stoker’s Summer Sublet is a visit to the comic corner of the dark side.

Bram Stoker’s Summer Sublet is the second in the Candy’s Monsters ebook series of novellas inspired by the classics of horror.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Entertaining And Interesting Story! 9 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Good Points

I loved this story-I thought it was very clever, how the author kept you reading until the last page to find out if she was going to be correct about her suspicions. The author also promised me a `journey through New York', and she wasn't wrong. You delve into the inner workings of a small portion of the city, filled with interesting characters, tango lessons, blood donations and countless cafés and glasses of wine. The descriptions were vivid and alive, really bringing to story itself to life. The main character was as interesting as the rest of the story, as we begin to delve into her mind and how confused it starts to become. You find yourself questioning along with her-is it real? What if that's true? What to do now? The writing flows very well, and moves at a comfortable pace. I also thought it was great how the author had included several hints towards Edger Allen Poe, Bram Stoker himself, and Oscar Wilde and his Dorian Gray.

Bad Points

I thought that the story dragged a little in parts, and although I understand this because of the ending, it would have been nice to have a little more action in parts. Conversely, the ending was almost too fast. There was a little fact that was found out (that could still have been taken by the main character as a cover up) near the end, and it seemed to race since that. It was almost as though it just needed wrapping up, and no more needed to be said in the story, where I would have liked a little more explained about things; perhaps the story taken in a different route.

Overall

I thought this was a really interesting story. It was a different take on the countless `Dracula' inspired stories out there, and was very original. I was hooked from the first page, and couldn't put it down until I found out--ah! Well, you'll have to read it to find out yourself, won't you? The descriptions of the city were amazing, and definitely allowed the reader to escape into a different place, and a different mind-set. I would recommend this story to anyone looking for a quick read that is tinged with hints from a classic book.

I give this story.....4/5 Stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, light and imaginative 21 July 2012
By Monique Y. Egelhoff - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I was invited to read this book to review it by the author and I wasn't sure what to expect. What I experienced was a really enjoyable light read that was a perfect palate cleanser between the heavier mystery/thrillers I regularly read. The story incorporates elements of the classic Dracula novel in a modern story set in NYC. It's what can happen with the power of suggestion coupled with solitude and a need to heal after a break up all combine to create the fantastic scenarios playing out in Willie's head as she pet sits in her friends apartment.

I found the premise imaginative, and when I first heard about it, I wondered if it would work. It does. If you want that light read that is entertaining and perfect for the summer, I say read this one. If I had bought the book, I would have felt it a better value than it's price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Fun, Smart, Grabs-You-From-Page 1 Read 9 Sep 2012

I sat down to read Bram Stoker's Summer Sublet like I do most books--well, I was lying down in bed, expecting to read a few pages before falling asleep with the lights on. Not a great habit, I know. Anyway, "Summer Sublet" forced a change in habit. It grabbed me from the first page with 1) clever twists on the Dracula story and 2) a voice not normally associated with Dracula--a savvy Manhattanite. This led me to read many pages in one sitting, er, "lie-ing downing"? Whatever, I really got into it and wanted, no, NEEDED to find out whether Willie's neighbor was/is a vampire. The flow of the story was fast-paced yet believable and I found the overall read to be time (very) well spent. I encourage you to buy and read Bram Stoker's Summer Sublet!
