1.0 out of 5 stars Do not believe wileys back cover information, 14 Sep 2006
Wiley informs you that:
(1)it contains practical examples with real life data
(2)numerical and algorithmic procedures
(3)principel concepts of insurance and finance.

Let's look at these claims:
(1) The number af practical examples with real life data is very limited. In chapter 6 and 7 Renewal processes/Markov chains there is exactly one example with real life data (on a 100 pages 1 page).
Indeed there are more headers titled examples but these illustrate the use of theorems to proof additional theoretical results.
You won't find any text on non-life insurance models for health care or disability insurance. As a matter of fact: you won't find the term non-life insurance in the index.
(2) Numerical and algorithmic procedures.
Generally we should think about this in terms of:
Numerical worked out examples, procedures devided in steps or pseudocode. You won't find any of these, only rather vague and very short descriptions.
As a matter of fact applications of MarkovChain MonteCarlo methods are totally absent.
(3) Principel concepts of insurance an finance?
This is rather odd, considering that references to non-life insurance are largely missing.....
So what's in the book?
The book is largely a book on the theory of stochastic processes. It mainly consists of theorems and proofs. So it will be of interest for students of mathematical statistics [...]

Finally the literature references are sometimes a bit odd.
For instance no reference is to be found for:
Flemming and Harrington: Counting processes for survival data.
Lawless: Methods for lifetime data.
Haberman and Pitto: Models for disability insurance.

INDEED I FEEL CHEATED BY WILEY. IT HAS IN MY VIEW DELIBERATLY PROVIDED MISLEADING INFORMATION.
p.m. it is not as if I can't read or understand this book: I have a degree in econometrics.
