the long-awaited album from califone;and there are some big changes.none of this album was recorded in chicago, joe adamik and jim becker are absent (hence a change in textures),and this often sounds like a tim rutuli solo album. but thats califone for you;lots of surprises. like all of their previous work its a definite grower and demands patience from the listener. just get a listen to 'moses' (amazing melody) or 'a thin skin of bullfight dust'(a subtle lesson in dynamics and beautiful too),then buy this album.

a Southwestern cocktail of desert beauty 25 Oct. 2013
By Charlie Quaker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
8th release from Chicago band—slide guitars meet synthesizers & horns in a Southwestern
cocktail of desert beauty that unabashedly combines an Americana ethos with electronic sound-
scaping and an epic, expansive sort of indie rock poignancy. Shades of Calexico, Giant Sand.

Beautiful Record 22 Oct. 2013

Very easy to listen to. These guys are very talented and each song grows on you quickly. With every listen, I like this album even more because I catch details and meaning I missed before. It's a slight departure from some of their other highly acclaimed work, but still a Caliphone record.
music for the palette 11 May 2014

It's like going to a hole in the wall restaurant where the chef is a culinary grad who's probably going to go too far one day with the drugs because his passion gets the better of him. That's the back story. The music is the food that is served there.

The music takes me on a pleasant journey... Off to other places and thoughts.
Still innovating and moving forward in their own unique direction.
