Book Description

13 Sep 2013
An essential book for any textile artist looking to expand their repertoire into two- and three-dimensional work. Leading textile artist, teacher and examiner Jean Draper takes you through the entire process from designing through construction to embellishment with mixed media. This beautiful but very practical book includes diagrams, detailed drawings and stitch information to guide the reader through the techniques, which include hand and machine embroidery. It covers Design, including recording information for translation into stitch (with lots of drawing tips); Choice of Threads, including some unusual threads and costumizing them; Constructing with Thread, everything from knotted forms, with decorative threads, grids and stacks, and coiled structures; Stitches in Thin Air, constructing with stitch alone using moulds and soluble fabric; Using Mixed Media in Stitched Structures, such as paper, sticks, wire and plastics; Adding Structure to an Existing Fabric; Three-Dimensional Fabric Structures. Working in two and three-dimensions is a growing genre of textile art and this incorporates a fresh approach and great design advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to think outside the box 9 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase
Buy this book to learn how to think "out of the embroidery box" and to inspire you to produce experimental and innovative textiles. Read it to understand and be able to follow the process of creativity. It will teach you to develop your own ideas and a personal style of working whatever you chose as your inspiration. Drawing to gather information is crucial to the artist embroiderer and practical ways to do this are suggested. Drawings, pages from sketch books and quality illustrations of Jean's own work enhance the text. Practical exercises include making new surfaces with and without a ground fabric, changing fabrics' structure through manipulation and working over moulds to create three dimensional pieces. An excellent inspirational book from a first class teacher.

I have waited a long time for Jean to write a book. It does not dissapoint. As one other review states, you read the words and hear the voice. Jean shares her ideas freely. Sketches and photographs of her work inspire, get the creative juices flowing and the fingers itching to get started on new ideas. A truely inspirational book from a truly inspirational embroiderer.
