As a fan of Louisiana music Slim Harpo is one of my most favorite artists from the Jay Miller vaults.Having all of Slim's recordings on 78's 45's LP's and CD's I find this CD to complete my SH collection. Although this CD has been on the market for some time and as I already have a few of these live tracks on another CD I have not given any priority to purchasing this particular CD until now because I felt that the quality of these live recordings was so very poor.Slim seems as though he is singing through his harp mic.and the crowd comes to life on the last tracks only.Surely Slim deserved a better response or was crowd reaction filtered down in the mixing room to zero? My summing up is that this CD is good to have if you are a collector but if you are looking for Slim Harpo do buy his studio recordings.These are world class!!!However If you are looking for great live Louisians blues then try and get hold of 'Blues live in Baton Rouge'

This may be an historical document ; but this is not music you can enjoy listening to. The band was not good that special night, several songs are very short - around one minute - , and the sound is so bad that it's hard to listen more than 5 minutes. One or two songs from this concert at the end of another Slim Harpo's cd would have been enough.

This is a performance by another artist I never expected to hear live, at least not from his "prime" years. Yeah, it sounds like crap- probably an air check from AM radio-very tinny and bass starved. Also, very precious. Now if only someone would unleash some authentic live Jimmy Reed (more representative than the strange show with Johnny Winter)...or Little Walter... or...
Has anyone ever found the audio or video tapes of the Ann Arbor R&B festival?? |
