5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book 19 May 2010
By Pauline
Format:Paperback
Stillwater Creek has all the elements needed to make it a thoroughly enjoyable read.

The story takes place in the small Australian town of Jingera with its creek and surf beach. The author's description comfortably transports the reader between the various homes and buildings in the community, setting the scene as the story evolves.

Set in 1957 it is written from the perspective of the very different main characters. A widowed Latvian piano teacher who has survived a concentration camp and her young daughter Zidra who arrive to make their home in a cottage near the beach. Zidra meets an aboriginal girl of her own age and we are also introduced to the butcher and his son, the publican's wife and a local farmer.

The characters are soon brought to life as we hear all about their past, their families and their hopes and aspirations for the future. Their lives intermingle and the story develops around their daily lives in Jingera. The book is full of many different twists, turns and surprises and keeps you enthralled right up to the very end - I am looking forward to reading the sequel as soon as it is published.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stillwater Creek 9 Nov 2011
By Jules
Format:Paperback
The descriptions of the bush, the coastline, the light, colours and sounds of this part of Australia - which I know and love - were so well expressed in Stillwater Creek that if I closed my eyes I could imagine myself there. As well as an inventive story that kept me wanting more, the characters were convincing and believable and as I read their interwoven tales I felt that kind of tension that only comes when you really become engaged with the story and the players. I look forward to more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Evocatively written and utterly engrossing 21 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought the novel Stillwater Creek just before a long-haul flight, and was utterly enthralled by it. Beautifully written, it's an engrossing read, with brilliant characterization and deep insights. The book is cleverly constructed around the lives of a number of very different individuals, and is based not only on dexterous plotting but also on insightful character development and subtle humor. The descriptive writing is deeply evocative, and the book would make a marvelous movie, as well as being a great read. It's one of those rare books that you can't stop reading, even though you don't want it to end.
The blurb on the back of the book states that Stillwater Creek is an unforgettable, heart-warming novel about love and loss, betrayal and hope, and they've got it right - I loved it.
