5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Outstanding 10 July 2012

Still Life photography has sometimes been described as one of the most exacting of the photographic disciplines. Yet, strangely, it is difficult to find many comprehensive texts on the subject (believe me I have been looking).

Recently I downloaded Kevin Best's book on the subject for Kindle. This has to be one of the best photographic books I have ever read. Kevin covers every aspect of the art that you can think of (and several aspects that you would not have considered). The book is extremely readable and, best of all, is illustrated with Kevin's truly stunning work. If you are still unsure about photography as an art form then this book will settle the argument once and for all... Kevin is a brilliant photographer and an inspired artist.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you are interested in still life photography then this is the first book that you should be buying.... It is worth every penny. One word of advice though.... although the book is for Kindle, I read it on my iPad. You just have to see Kevin's work in colour... Sorry Amazon but your device just does not do this book justice on this occasion.

Finally, I would like to mention that I came across Kevin's work on Flickr after buying the book. I wrote to him to thank him for such an inspirational work. I was thrilled to receive a reply from him along with some very kind and encouraging comments about my latest effort! Thus, not only is Kevin a true master of his subject but it turns out that he is a really nice guy as well...

I very much hope that Kevin will be writing some more books... I will be his first customer if he does!

4.0 out of 5 stars Still life Photography that's worth trying 2 May 2013

This aspect of photography,in my opinion, is difficult to do well.
Most amateur photographers prefer the great outdoors whether it be landscape, seascape, cityscape or nature/macro photography.Others love people photography whether it be beautiful portraits with studio or strobist type lighting as well as random steet style photography.
It's very true to say photography is a hobby you can do most of your life from young to old and still have room to learn more.
If you wanted to try still life type photography, then here is a book written by an expert in the genre.
Kevin Best is himself a talented photographer and shares with us his knowledge of still life photography. He's also inspired by the old masters of the Dutch golden age of Art who themselves created great (although painted) still lifes. His own work is superb and almost have a painterly look about them.
Kevin shows us in his book, how to achieve lovely lighting on your still life. Your present camera and a standard prime lens plus some lighting equipment can achieve excellent still life images.
I do most of my photography between April and October each year.I try to persuade myself to keep shooting right through the winter but sometimes it can be grey and bleak. If you feel the same, still life photography is a good way of keeping going with your hobby even when the weather's foul. This book will help a lot.

Excellent covers the field very well and not restricted to flora and fauna like most still life books.
Would also recommend Table top photography.
