I bought this because I loved 'Still Game', so I wanted to see the original sketch show. I'm commenting on series 1 because I didn't buy the entire box set (in case I didn't like it).
Well, I love it and it's really funny, with 'link' sketches which don't always make you laugh (a bit like Monty Python and Fast Show), and sometimes lack of a 'punchline', but it works. Best bits: Betty's wartime reminiscences, with her showing her bloomers, the 1958 builders who wake up in the modern day but are still in black and white, and the actor with the gritty voice who fails every audition, not to mention Jack and Victor themselves. The makeover sketch where Jack and Victor were supposed to 'make over' one another's flats was a scream! How funny to see the actors who play 'Winston' and 'Tam' without their get-up in the other sketches! I also loved the DSS sketch where the 'snoop' comes to the wrong address! I could go on.
What I don't like are the apartment scenes in Ford and Greg's flat at the beginning and end. I don't think they add anything to the show, and they are generally a bit tedious. I don't know whether they realised this themselves and dropped this from the other series. Still, I want to award five stars, because of the talented writing, and the fact that it makes me laugh out loud. That's what comedy is all about!
