Product Description

This is the 2002 BBC production of the classic tale Stig of the Dump. Barney a young shy boy who, with only his older sister for company, is spending a lonely summer with his grandparents when he makes the discovery of his life. He's chased by the village bullies and tumbles down an overgrown quarry. There, in the magical world of the quarry floor, he meets a figure with shaggy hair and two bright eyes. Stig is a caveman, hundreds of thousands years old, but gradually he and Barney learn to understand one another.

Together they raid the rubbish dump at the bottom of the quarry, using the things the villagers throw away to improve Stig's cave, and so begins a special friendship, and a story which has charmed children and adults alike ever since it was first published in 1963.

Full of wonderful special effects from the creators of beasts in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, this production won an International Emmy Award and a BAFTA.

5.0 out of 5 stars TOP OF THE HEAP 1 Jun 2008
By Mrs. F. S. Haynes VINE VOICE
Stig of the Dump has always been one of my favourite childrens books, and this series does not disappoint. At last this superb series is on DVD, my 8 year old and I have watched it with great delight, not completely true to Clive King's book but really well acted and a great production.
Stig is the caveman that Barney discovers after falling into his den in the local quarry. Barney is soon getting into all sorts of mischief to help his new friend who in turn comes to Barney's rescue more than once with plenty of laughs along the way. Of course none of Barney's family believe in Stig but he wins his sister round to help Stig get back to his own time with plenty of laughs, and few bits younger viewers may find a little scary but you can't go wrong with this classic family viewing. It won't be long before we watch it again. Excellent. If you remember reading this story as a child with pleasure you will really enjoy watching STIG, wishing he was your best friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stig of the Dump 2 May 2008
Absolutly superb. Tom Sangster plays the part of Barny really well and the theme music is, if anything, a little bit haunting but is one of my personal favourites. The story follows Barney as he tries to escape the school bullies and falls of a cliff into a quarry. whilst there, he meets a strange man (Stig) Who untangles Barney from the brambles that he'd been tangled in. From there, it is a story of friendship. Strongly reccomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating 29 April 2012

I have just used this for year 5 narrative and play scripts along with the book.

My class were captivated from the start. Each episode lasts 26 minutes and there are 6. What's more if you leave the subtitles on they occasionally include stage directions too.

The story does differ from the original book somewhat. It's far more modern and this is good as you can compare the two and the children can relate more to the modern interpretation.

I let my own children watch it first, aged 8 and 15 and they both loved it as much as I did when I watched the original BBC version in 1984!

Buy it and smile!

4.0 out of 5 stars Brings back memories. 30 Dec 2011

Watched this series when I was a child and bought this for my children. They loved it (they are aged 10 and 7). It's very long as it is the whole series in one but definitely worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars stig 12 Nov 2011
The Stig DVD is an excellent educational tool to get boys interested in writing. Although nearly 10 years old it is still loved by my class. Quick half hour programmes mean you can easily fit an episode into a school day. The Snargets provide a view of bullying that it often hard to imagine for the children. Recommend for all ks2 primary teachers to engage your most challenging boys.

I remembered watching this as a child and loved being able to buy it so many years later! Great to watch alongside the book. Great for comparison work with a class.
DVD chapters are obviously slightly different to book chapters but fabulous all the same! :)

I bought this for my year 5 class as it is a book we are reading in class. The series is not completely faithfully to the book but the children enjoyed it and we got lots of discussion about what had been changed and why.
