Steampacket have been rated as "the first supergroup" and I won't argue that one. The line-up was Rod Stewart/Julie Driscoll/Long John Baldry (vocals), Brian Auger (Hammond organ), Vic Briggs (guitar), Richard Brown (bass) and Micky Waller (drums). They were formed in 1965 and despite having a great reputation as a live act no official recordings were released at the time. Tapes made at a rehearsal at the Marquee were later released as an LP entitled "The First Supergroup" and a check of the tracks on that release show that the same are on this CD.

The tracks are: 1. Can I get a witness, 2. The In-crowd, 3. Baby take me, 4. Baby Baby, 5. Back at the Chicken Shack, 6. Cry me a river, 7. Oh baby, don't you do it, 8. Holy smoke and 9. Lord Remember me.

I've included the above info about the track listings and the artists as the packaging with this CD is zilch, nothing but the front and rear sleeve sheets. In fact my front sheet is the "pink" one shown in the smaller thumbnail under the main one shown here on Amazon. Also, as you will have seen on here Amazon gives no mention of the tracks.

That out of the way, now the content. Anyone familiar with Brian Auger's music and other LP's will recognise this one. Tracks 2, 5 and 8 are instrumentals all fronted by BA's Hammond organ skills, and pretty good they are too as usual. A couple do also feature some pretty good jazz guitar work, although the solo on track 5 is not quite loud enough meaning some low notes are "lost".

Don't expect a lot from Rod, obviously he was a make-weight with this outfit and he only seems to lead on track 1. His voice is recognisable though, as is LJB's. He fronts 2 or 3 tracks and Jools only seems to provide backing or shared vocals on several songs.

If you are looking for Rod Stewart - forget it. But this is Long John Baldry at his best (a couple of leads by Rod, but he pales compared to LJB.
