Product Description

Product Description

Steven Spielberg long-ago secured his place in twentieth century history as its most successful film-maker with such box office titans as Jaws (1975), the Indiana Jones films and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) to his credit. But despite recent Oscar acknowledgement (after years of snubbing), is he also the century's most under-rated film-maker? From Duel (1972) to Saving Private Ryan (1998) and everything in between, this Pocket Essential to Steven Spielberg examines every film as director, unearthing the shared themes throughout his career. James Clark also provides a full account of his work as producer and writer as well as his excursions in to TV and other media projects.

About the Author

James Clarke is a writer and film-maker and studied Film at both the University of Warwick and University of Bristol.

I don't normally review books, but I felt compelled to comment on this great guide. It's not only concise, but also very readable. Clarke's writing style is to be complimented, and I will definitely look out for others in this series.

There are certainly a lot of books about the bearded 'Berg, but if you only buy one, I strongly suggest it's this. Clarke clearly has a vast knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, his subject, yet has balanced this perfectly with accessibility, making it ideal not just for the fan or film student, but for anyone who just wants to find out more about the most famous movie director of our time. All in all, an excellent read.

This book is a brilliant piece of work. Concise, yet detailed descriptions of each of Spielberg's films, complete with background information and a rating of the film, go together with explanations of the continuous themes in Spielberg's work and interesting information on the man himself, as well as upcoming work (i.e, AI). The writing is articulate and easy to read. The author shows a clear and in-depth knowledge of his subject. Thouroughly enjoyable.
