Product Description

Product Description

At the pinnacle of his career and entering his fourth decade as a director, Spielberg is firmly established as the world's most popular filmmaker. Celebrated for his mastery of spectacle and fantasy he has also proved his skill as a craftsman of compelling populist drama. Like the great directors of Hollywood's golden age, Spielberg has the facility to work across a range of subjects and genres, yet he always roots them in personal themes. This guide examines every Spielberg film since Duel and includes an overview of the work of this singular director.

About the Author

James Clarke is a writer who has also written the Pocket Essentials: George Lucas and the Virgin Film Guide to the films of Francis Ford Coppola. He studied film at the Universities of Warwick and Bristol.

I don't normally review books, but I felt compelled to comment on this great guide. It's not only concise, but also very readable. Clarke's writing style is to be complimented, and I will definitely look out for others in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Steven Spielberg book I've ever read!, 14 Jun 2001
By
There are certainly a lot of books about the bearded 'Berg, but if you only buy one, I strongly suggest it's this. Clarke clearly has a vast knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, his subject, yet has balanced this perfectly with accessibility, making it ideal not just for the fan or film student, but for anyone who just wants to find out more about the most famous movie director of our time. All in all, an excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, concise study of the man and his work., 14 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This book is a brilliant piece of work. Concise, yet detailed descriptions of each of Spielberg's films, complete with background information and a rating of the film, go together with explanations of the continuous themes in Spielberg's work and interesting information on the man himself, as well as upcoming work (i.e, AI). The writing is articulate and easy to read. The author shows a clear and in-depth knowledge of his subject. Thouroughly enjoyable.
